VIERA, Fla. – The Lourdes softball team (2-5, 0-0 in WHAC) defeated the Trinity College of Jacksonville Eagles (4-16) via a 12-0 shutout on Wednesday afternoon in the Space Coast Tournament.
Lourdes broke their three-game losing streak with the victory and played their best overall game of the season. The blowout win was highlighted by a combined no-hitter thrown by freshman duo
Zoe Ziems and
Elena Scott.
Ziems, a freshman from Bowling Green, Ohio, was making her second appearance of her collegiate career. She dominated the Eagles' offense, throwing two scoreless, hitless innings, with two strikeouts as well.
With the game well in hand by the third inning, the Lourdes coaching staff swapped Ziems for fellow freshman pitcher
Elena Scott. The rookie hailing from North Olmsted, Ohio also threw a dominant game on the bump.
Scott threw the final three innings of the game with two strikeouts, and also gave up zero hits. Scott was credited with the win, due to Ziems not going the majority of the game; giving her the best record on the team at 1-1.
The only blemishes on the basepaths were a walk by each pitcher and a hit by pitch by Ziems. Besides that, no Eagles got on base, marking a historic no-hitter thrown by only freshman pitchers for Lourdes.
While the pitching was near flawless, the hitting in the victory can not be understated. The Gray Wolves came into the game in an offensive slump, batting below .175 in the tournament and around .190 on the year. However, Lourdes started tattooing the ball right out of the gate against TCJ.
Utility player
Ava Auler continued her productive bat at the top of the Gray Wolves lineup with a line drive single in the first inning that ultimately led to the first two runs being scored. TCJ's catcher struggled early on to prevent passed balls as two more runs came into score to make the game 4-0 after the second inning.
In the third inning, the bottom of the Gray Wolves' order came to life with an RBI double by
Robyn Ryan and a single by
Cami Heath that scored two more runs. Heath was later scored in the inning by a
Karlei Conard pinch hit RBI as Lourdes went up 8-0 before Ziems was taken out of the game.
Liv Hussar tacked on another run with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning to put further separation between the two teams. In the fifth inning, Lourdes went into double digits in the scoring column when
Abby Sparks hit a pinch-hit two-RBI single up the middle.
Ryleigh Mercer followed suit, getting a pinch-hit base hit up the middle to score the 12
th run of the game.
Stats
Overall, the victory was a complete team effort. The pitching staff threw lights out while the hitting provided a season-high 12 runs on nine hits. Lourdes sent 15 different batters to the plate in the game. The six pinch-hitters went a combined two-for-eight with five RBI's, proving that Lourdes' depth on offense continues to improve as the season goes on.
Leading the charge offensively for Lourdes
Ava Auler and
Cami Heath. Auler went two-for-three with a run scored in the game. Heath, the Lourdes bottom hitter went two-for-two with three runs scored and two RBI's. Heath has started the previous two games and has barely gotten out since being inputted as the starting centerfielder.
