GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 8-ranked Lourdes Men's Volleyball team (18-3, 12-1 in WHAC) swept the Aquinas Saints (5-15, 2-9 in WHAC), 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Lourdes now has 13 sweep victories on the season and four in a row. They've won the last 13 consecutive sets and have lost just two sets total in the month of March.
Lourdes held a +10 advantage in kills, +6 advantage in set assists, and a +14 advantage in digs in the victory. Both teams were tied with seven blocks apiece and Aquinas held a slim 4-3 advantage in the service ace game.
Jaber Badarne, the four-time WHAC Attacker of the Week, led the team with 18 kills in the match. He had six kills in the 26-24 first set thriller that Lourdes fought back to win.
Juan Diego Vargas Mendoza and
Felipe Tramontin each had eight kills as well and played consistent throughout the match.
Ben Palma had another solid night at the net with four blocks for Lourdes, including a crucial one in set one to stop an Aquinas run.
WHAC Setter of the Week,
Joey Bianco, had 36 set assists, averaging an outstanding 12 per set in the match. Bianco accumulated 30 assists in all three wins last week and has reached that mark in six of his last 11 matches.
Bianco's 13 set assists in set two helped Lourdes string together multiple five point runs en route to a six-point victory.
Brayden Moyars led the team with 14 digs, which helped to give the team a massive 48-34 advantage in digs in the match. Moyars was especially productive in the third set, in which he had nearly half his digs, rarely allowing Aquinas' offense to get early points.
