Lourdes Clinches WHAC Tournament No.3 Seed with Wins over RCU and LTU

Gray Wolves will play Mount Vernon Nazarene in WHAC Tournament 1st round

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The No. 11-ranked Lourdes Men's Volleyball team (21-5, 15-3 in WHAC) swept the Rochester Christian Warriors (0-22, 0-18 in WHAC) and beat the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils (16-7, 12-6 in WHAC), 3-1 over Alumni Weekend.

The Ebeid Rec Center was filled in both games with the student section and alumni, who provided support all weekend long.

Match #1: W vs. RCU (3-0) (25-8, 25-11, 25-17)

Prior to the RCU game, juniors Brayden Moyars and Jack McMurray were recognized for their academic and athletic achievements during their time at Lourdes. Upon completion of the game, the alumni in attendance were also recognized.

Lourdes' outside hitter Felipe Tramontin helped the Gray Wolves earn the sweep over RCU in a dominant win. The Parana, Brazil native led the team with 12 kills, followed by Jaber Badarne with eight.

Contributing in the setting game was Joey Bianco with 17 assists and Daniel Nascimento with 10.

Active on the defensive side was Brayden Moyars, who led the team in digs with seven, along with Joey Bianco and Felipe Tramontin trailing with five digs apiece.

Match #2: W vs LTU (3-1) (25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20)

After coming off of two previous losses, the RCU win gave the Gray Wolves the confidence they needed to dominate their final regular season match against Lawrence Tech on Senior Day.

The match kicked off with the team's five seniors being recognized before the game and more alumni were recognized with volleyballs presenting their program career records afterwards.

Lourdes won the first two sets in close fashion and were up 7-0 to start the third set. However, a timeout by Lawrence Tech's head coach, former Lourdes alum, Gustavo Heidrich, calmed the Blue Devils down and helped them quickly capture the lead and eventually the 26-24 set.

The energy from the crowd however was enough to swing the momentum in the Gray Wolves' favor to overcome the late third set surge against the Blue Devils.

Jaber Badarne ended the fourth set and the match with a thunderous kill, passing Eduardo Ayala for the third most career kills in Lourdes men's volleyball history. Badarne contributed 21 kills in the Lawrence Tech match and spoke postgame on his record and the team's success this season.

"It feels amazing to get the win with the guys in front of all the alumni," Badarne said. "For the record, It's definitely an honor to be a part of the history of this program that's been successful for almost two decades. It's just a great feeling and I'm looking forward to the tournament next week."

Joey Bianco also had a phenomenal match, collecting 48 of the team's 52 assists, officially passing the 2,800 mark for his career.

Carrying over the defensive momentum from the RCU victory was Brayden Moyars, who once again led the team in digs with 14. Moyars now ranks 2nd on the all time career digs list for program history.

Next Up
The Gray Wolves' run at the Ebeid Rec Center isn't over yet, as they host the first round of the WHAC tournament against Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday, April 14 at 7pm.

Lourdes comes into the tournament as the No. 3 seed, while the Cougars squeak into the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Lourdes has beaten MVNU twice this year via sweeps. A win would move the Gray Wolves to the semifinal matchup against Indiana Tech at Bethel's gymnasium.
