TOLEDO, Ohio – The Lourdes baseball team (13-23, 7-12 in WHAC) defeated the Defiance Yellow Jackets (13-25, 6-11 in WHAC), 25-9 in the opening game of Sunday's home doubleheader.
The Gray Wolves collected a season-high 25 runs on a season-high 22 hits in the contest, consistently putting up multiple runs in almost every inning in the game.
Freshman pitcher J.J Foti was credited with his fourth victory of the season after he threw the first three innings with four earned runs. Although the team was winning 13-4 after the third, he had to leave the game early due to his five walks and high pitch count.
Zane Mullins followed Foti up with the fourth and fifth innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out three Yellow Jackets hitters.
Nathan Frontine made his first appearance of the year out of the bullpen, closing the game out with two innings and two earned runs allowed. Overall, walks were an issue for the Lourdes pitching staff, but the offense counteracted it with multiple long streaks of scoring.
Lourdes scored three runs in the first, three runs in the second and four runs in the fifth. That alone would have been enough to beat Defiance by a run. However, the real damage came in the third and fourth innings, when Lourdes put 15 combined runs.
Alex Dupree led the offense with a 3-for-3 game, five RBI's, four runs scored, and two walks.
Drake Sekinger hit great in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a walk, and an RBI.
Jase Kennedy also had a three-hit day, tallied three RBI's, and hit a moonshot of a home run to deep left field.
Jace Bloomer also had multiple hits and had four RBI's in the game.
Will Brose also had a multi-hit game with three RBI's from the starting DH spot in the lineup.
Brad Hughes and Andrew Arnston also each had multiple RBI's in the win.
Overall, the Lourdes offense hit seven doubles, two triples and a home run. On the bases, the Gray Wolves swiped eight bags. Five of the stolen bases were by A.J Brinson, who now has 12 on the year.
