SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Lourdes baseball team (13-28, 7-17 in WHAC) got swept by Cleary (25-17, 15-9 in WHAC) and (RV) Indiana Tech (31-13, 20-4 in WHAC) in a four-game homestand over the weekend.
The home doubleheaders were the last ever played by Lourdes at Mercy Health Field, creating an emotional scene at the ballpark. Over 100 fans packed the bleachers in both days as the Sylvania community showed out one last time for the Terracotta & Gray.
Saturday's doubleheader against Cleary looked to be completely in Lourdes' control early on. Game one started with a behemoth of a home run by
Alex Dupree. The local Sylvania native blasted the long ball deep over the right-center field fence to give Lourdes an early 2-0 lead.
Cleary struck back with a two-run RBI single of their own in the fourth to briefly tie the game. Lourdes flipped the momentum back on their side in the bottom of the fourth with a massive seven-run frame.
Five different Lourdes batters notched an RBI in the fourth, including
Jase Kennedy,
Landon Brown, and
Jace Bloomer, who hit back-to-back-to-back doubles.
With Lourdes up 9-2 and senior ace pitcher
Brenden Holland throwing lights out, it seemed like the Gray Wolves would run away with the upset victory. However, Holland gave up four runs in the sixth inning as Cleary cut the lead to just three. Holland was pulled in the middle of the sixth due to his pitch count eclipsing 120.
The Lourdes relievers who followed Holland threw as many walks (5) as they did outs as Cleary eventually tied the game at nine apiece in the sixth. Then, a crucial
Nathan Frontine balk gave Cleary the 10-9 lead and the eventual comeback victory.
With game one barely slipping through Lourdes' grasp, the energy level seemed to decrease for game two. Cleary got off to a blazing start with five runs in the first four innings. Although an A.J Brinson two-RBI triple in the sixth inning lightly decreased the lead, Cleary took it right back with runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
Game two's loss was different than game one's in that the Lourdes pitching staff threw less walks and the defense made less errors. Cleary's hitting was simply better in game two and allowed them to come away with the nine-run victory.
Sunday afternoon's games against Indiana Tech were extra special with the senior night pre-game festivities. The Lourdes crowd drew record attendance for the season as families, friends and students consistently cheered on the Gray Wolves throughout the two games.
Unfortunately, Indiana Tech got the better of Lourdes in both games with 37 runs of total offense. Game two was an 18-1 loss for Lourdes but game two was relatively close at 19-10. Although the pitching struggled in both games, Lourdes' offense was very efficient in Sunday's opener.
Five different Gray Wolves' batters got multiple hits in the loss, including
Morgan Kleps, who had just two conference starts prior.
Drake Sekinger,
Alex Dupree,
Landen Vance, and Andrew Arnston also each had multiple RBI's in the loss.
Despite the score outcomes, Lourdes is still in a position where they can make the final spot in the WHAC Tournament. Currently Cornerstone is slotted as the No. 8 seed with nine wins, Siena Heights is right behind them with eight victories. Meanwhile, Lourdes and Defiance remain alive in a tie for 10
th place with seven conference wins each.
The Gray Wolves will likely have to sweep Siena Heights on the road this weekend in a four-game series to be the No. 8 seed. The other path to the postseason for Lourdes is if they go 3-1 against Defiance and Cornerstone drops all four games against Madonna.
