LeRoy King was named an assistant basketball coach for Lourdes University prior to the program’s inaugural season in 2010-2011.
King has been instrumental in the Gray Wolves’ success, which has seen the team win more than 65 games over the first four years. Lourdes has made two NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances with King on the bench, and in 2012-2013 the Gray Wolves finished in third place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Four players have earned All-WHAC accolades during King’s time at Lourdes, including a pair of First Team selections, with two others earning All-Defensive Team honors. Two more players have garnered All-Newcomer Team accolades.
King began his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant men’s coach at Owens Community College, a position he held for nine seasons. He played a pivotal role in recruiting for the Express and helped develop the talent necessary to keep Owens among the elite junior colleges in the country. Owens captured six Ohio Community College Athletic Conference championships during his stay, made three NJCAA national tournament appearances, and finished the 2000-2001 season ranked #1 in the nation. He coached several players that went on to play at the NCAA Division I level, and led three NJCAA All-Americans.
King spent one year as the varsity head coach at Lake High School before moving to Central Catholic High School as an assistant for two years. In 2008-2009, he helped lead the Irish to a City League runner-up finish, one year before Central Catholic won their first City League championship in 42 years. His second season with the Irish saw the team finish 21-3, also winning the sectional championship and finishing as district runner-up.
A native of Muskegon Heights, Mich., King began his collegiate career at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, where he led the team to a 30-2 record in 1993-1994. He went on to play at Youngstown State University, where he was a team captain and led the squad in rebounding.
King is a 1998 graduate of Youngstown State University, with a degree in social work and he also works at Harbor Healthcare as an intervention specialist.
