Gray Wolves Hang On To Beat Robert Morris

Gray Wolves Huddle Up
On Saturday afternoon the Lourdes University men's volleyball team hosted the Robert Morris Eagles at the Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter. The Gray Wolveswin the match 3-1.

The first set would be a back and forth battle early on with both teams exchanging points through 6-6. This would continue until Lourdes would finally take a two point advantage at 10-8. The Gray Wolves would extend their lead in the set at 15-10. After the timeout the Gray Wolves would start to kick it in gear at 18-11 forcing an Eagles timeout. The Gray Wolves would dominate the rest of the set winning 25-16.

Lourdes would finish the set with 13 kills on 21 total attempts and 1 error. The Eagles would finish with 10 kills on 23 attempts and 5 errors. Lourdes finished with a set percentage of .571 compared to .217.

The second set would start out well for the Gray Wolves as they would jump out to 3-0 lead. At the midway point of the set it would once again look like domination for Lourdes as they would have a five point lead at 15-10. After the mandatory midway timeout the Gray Wolves would reel off two more straight points including a monster size kill from Jeremy Wood that would force the Eagles to call a timeout and try and regroup with Lourdes leading 17-10. The lead would grow to nine as Lourdes went up 21-12. Lourdes would win the set 25-13.

The Gray Wolves would finish the set with a percentage of .562 with 11 kills on 16 total attempts and two errors. The Robert Morris Eagles would finish the set with a percentage of .062 with six kills on 16 attempts and five errors.
The third set would see a few more rallies for each point as both teams would battle to a Lourdes 6-2 advantage. The Gray Wolves would continue building on their lead as they would force an Eagles timeout as Lourdes would lead 11-5. The Eagles would fight back in the set trailing only 14-12. The Gray Wolves would find the accelerator after that though putting up an 18-13 lead.  After leading 19-13 the Eagles would put a run of six straight points to climb back into the match and tie things up at 19 a piece forcing a Lourdes timeout. Immediately following the break the Eagles would block a Jeremy Wood kill attempt to take their first lead of the set at 19-20. The Eagles would increase their lead following an error on the Gray Wolves to serve for the set at 20-24. The Eagles would take the set 22-25.

Mental errors more than anything doomed the Gray Wolves in the set after leading by as much as six points the Gray Wolves committed eight errors. Lourdes would finish the set with 14 kills on 30 total attempts for a percentage of .200. The Eagles finished with nine kills on 22 total attempts for a percentage of .227.

The momentum for the Eagles would carry over into the fourth set as they would grab the first point before a serving error would tie things up. Lourdes would grab the lead at 4-3 with Nick DiMarco serving. The set would be tied up at 8-8. Lourdes would take a lead of six at 15-9. A rally by the Eagles would bring them closer as they cut into the lead to trail 18-16. Lourdes would jump the lead back to four at 20-16. Lourdes would drop two points immediately following the timeout before leading 22-20. With the score 24-22 Lourdes would serve for the match and another service fault would make it 24-23. The Eagles would get a kill to draw it at 24 apiece. Lourdes would grab the next two points to win the set 26-24 and win the game.

The Gray Wolves would hold on for the win as the Eagles would rally in the last two sets.
