The Lourdes University Gray Wolves men's volleyball team played hard in the semifinal matchup against the #2 ranked and #1 seeded St. Ambrose Fighting Bees on Friday afternoon in Chicago, IL at St. Xavier University. The Gray Wolves came up short in their upset bid falling in four sets.
The first set was all St. Ambrose as they came to prove that they are the #1 seed for a reason. The Fighting Bees finished the set with a .462 attacking percentage with 15 kills on 26 attempts. The Gray Wolves finished the first set at .207 with 11 kills on 29 attempts. Lourdes lost the set 25-20.
Lourdes woke up in the second set against the Fighting Bees winning the set 25-23 behind a never say die attitude. While the Gray Wolves gave everything they could dish out St. Ambrose took all of it and gave it back. The set was a huge win for Lourdes as they proved they could play with the best. Defensive net play was the biggest emphasis of the set for Lourdes and they held St. Ambrose to just a .219 attacking percentage on 11 kills out of 32 attempts. Lourdes hit 15 kills out of 34 attempts for a .206 percentage.
The third set of the match was one the Gray Wolves would hope they never remember in their entire lifetime as the Fighting Bees stung the Gray Wolves to the tune of 25-14. Lourdes was not able to carry over the momentum of set number two and paid for it early on falling behind and never able to make up any ground in the set. Lourdes finished the set with a -.087 attacking percentage with just 6 kills on 23 attempts while St. Ambrose ramped the offensive level back up at .391 with 11 kills on 23 attempts.
The fourth set was all Fighting Bees once again as they dominated from the beginning winning the set 25-15. Lourdes would fight hard but just not have enough firepower in the end. Lourdes finished the game with just 36 kills including 10 in the last two sets combined.
The Gray Wolves finished out the season with a 16-10 overall and record and 7-7 in MAMVIC play.
