Lourdes University bounced back from a loss just 16 hours prior to post a three-set sweep of Clarke on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Crusaders 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 at the Kehl Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
“This was a good team win for us on the road against a solid opponent,” head coach
Greg Reitz stated after the victory. “It was important for us to bounce back after last night.”
Chris Lockwood (Kailua, Hawaii/Poway [Calif.] H.S.) hit .556 for the Gray Wolves with 12 kills on the afternoon while
Nick DiMarco (Torrance, Calif./South Torrance H.S.) added a match-high 13 kills.
Steve Barcus (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon H.S.) handed out 38 assists in the victory while
Brad Miller (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) registered eight digs.
“We played much more efficiently today,” Reitz added. “We transitioned the ball well and did a good job of blocking. They didn't get many first ball kills.”
Lourdes went on a 6-1 run midway through set one to take the early advantage in the match. Clarke fought back to tie the set at 17 only to have the Gray Wolves close the set scoring five of the final eight points. Set two was tied at 19 before the Gray Wolves scored six of the final seven points to take a 2-0 lead in the contest. The final set had 12 ties and six lead changes, breaking a 22-22 deadlock with three of the next four points. A
Frank Craig (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood H.S.) tallied the match-winning kill.
As a team the Gray Wolves hit .305 in the contest while holding the Crusaders to a .132 clip. Tyler Wills led Clarke (7-6, 5-2 MAMVIC East) with 10 kills and four blocks.
Lourdes (4-5, 2-4) will return to the court on Thursday evening, traveling to Chicago, Ill. to face Saint Xavier. First serve is slated for 8 p.m. EST.
