For the second straight week Lourdes jumped out to a two-set lead on a ranked opponent, but like last week against #4 Saint Ambrose, on Saturday afternoon #6 Cardinal Stritch rallied to defeat the Gray Wolves 30-32, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-8 at the Cardinal Stritch Fieldhouse in Milwaukee, Wis.
“We didn't play well long enough to win the match today,” head coach
Greg Reitz stated. “We need to keep the momentum we gain early in the match going as the match moves along.”
The Gray Wolves won the opening set for the fifth time in the first six matches this season, needing extra points to do so. Lourdes took advantage of back-to-back attack errors by the Wolves to end the set which featured eighteen ties and 10 lead changes. The Gray Wolves hit .344 in the opening set.
The lead grew to 2-0 after set two as Lourdes rallied from 23-20 down to score the final five points of the setoff of the serve of
Nick DiMarco (Torrance, Calif./South Torrance H.S.). The Gray Wolves held Cardinal Stritch to just .074 hitting in the stanza.
Lourdes made a late run in set three after falling 14-7 to close within two, 24-22, but could not earn the victory as the Wolves extended the match. In set for Cardinal Stritch hit .407 as a team and used a 9-3 run midway through to force the decisive final set. In that fifth set the Wolves never trailed, hitting .692 with 10 kills and just one error to complete the comeback.
Lourdes hit .213 for the match led by 17 kills from DiMarco.
Trevor Lund (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills H.S.) added 10 kills while
Oliver Cizmazia handed out 45 assists.
Brad Miller (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) had a team-high nine digs while
Frank Craig (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood H.S.) tallied six blocks.
Adam Cosson led Cardinal Stritch (10-1, 9-0 MAMVIC East) with 22 kills while Jimmy Torromeo added 13 kills. The Wolves hit .307 as a team.
Lourdes (2-4, 1-3) will return home to Tam-o-Shanter on Tuesday evening to host Siena Heights in a non-conference match. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
