Lourdes Volleyball Suffers Season’s First Loss to #9 Missouri Valley

Lourdes opened up play at the Mount Saint Joseph tournament on Saturday afternoon, dropping their first match of the season to ninth-ranked Missouri Valley 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16 at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
 
The Vikings held the Gray Wolves to just .130 hitting on the afternoon while hitting .264 in the victory.
 
The opening set was never separated by more than three points until the final point of the set.  The set was tied eight times, but Lourdes was never able to take the lead after Missouri Valley took the lead 5-4.  Set two was also tight, with 10 ties.  Lourdes led 14-12 before a 6-2 run by the Vikings shifted the lead.  The Gray Wolves battled back, scoring six of the final seven points to earn the victory and even the match at one.
 
Set three saw even more ties, a total of 12, and Lourdes led most of the way until a late run by the Vikings.  The Gray Wolves led 21-18 before Missouri Valley scored seven of the final nine points to pull out the win.  Lourdes led the final set 13-10 as well, however the Vikings went on a 12-1 run to post the 25-16 victory and close out the match.
 
Jo'Lon Clark (Compton, Calif./Long Beach Poly H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with 17 kills while Garrett Jones (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas H.S.) added 14 more.  Brad Miller (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) tallied 17 digs defensively while Clark had 15 more.  Frank Craig (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood H.S.) recorded four blocks while Steve Barcus (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon H.S.) handed out 33 assists.
 
Jacob Haar led Missouri Valley (3-0) with 18 kills on 22 swings, hitting .727 for the match.  Ding Hui recorded 16 digs while Stan Bosovik registered eight blocks.
 
Lourdes (1-1) will return to the Harrington Center on Sunday afternoon to close out play in the tournament.  The Gray Wolves will face Rust at 1 p.m. with a battle against Mount Saint Joseph to follow at 3:30 p.m.
