Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) scored a career-high 33 points, passing the 1,000-point plateau in the process, on Wednesday evening helping to lead Lourdes to a 68-56 victory over Marygrove at the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit, Mich.
Tilden, who entered the game with 997 career points, made 8-of-15 shots from long range while playing all 40 minutes, helping the Gray Wolves to their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season while snapping a three-game losing streak.
"Lauren got in a rhythm after she made the first one," head coach
Karen McConnell said after the game. "She really kept us in the game."
Lourdes trailed from the start as it took the Gray Wolves nearly five minutes to score its first field goal. Tilden's first triple, which gave her 1,000 points, pulled Lourdes to within two, 8-6, at the 13:04 mark. Marygrove pushed its lead to seven midway through the stanza before a basket by
Jessica Durr (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton H.S.) and back-to-back triples by Tilden put Lourdes on top 18-17. Tilden added one more three to cap the 11-0 run at the 8:14 mark.
The Mustangs responded, retaking the lead 28-26 before Lourdes scored seven straight points to take the lead for good. Neither team scored over the final 2:11 of the half as the Gray Wolves took a 35-34 lead into the break.
Both teams started slow in the second half, but Lourdes scored the first four points to build on its lead while holding Marygrove scoreless for more than five minutes. The Gray Wolves maintained its narrow lead until a quick five-point spurt pushed the advantage to double figures, 57-47, with under six minutes to play. The outburst started a 14-3 run which increased the lead to 66-50, and Lourdes would maintain the double digit advantage the rest of the way.
Tilden was the lone Gray Wolf to finish in double figures in the scoring column, but Durr pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with her seven points.
Katie Pearcy (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid H.S.) added seven points as well.
"We had different people step up at different times tonight. That was big," McConnell added. "Marygrove is a much improved team this season."
Raeha Weaver led Marygrove (1-7, 0-4 WHAC) with 17 points while Elisha Major added 12 more. The Mustangs were held to just 32.8% shooting for the night.
"We really needed this win," McConnell concluded. "We now have a good feeling heading into Thanksgiving break."
Lourdes (5-4, 1-3) will have eight days off before returning to the hardwood on Dec. 3 as the Gray Wolves host Aquinas. Tip-off against the Saints is set for 6 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
