Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes readies itself for a busy weekend at the Stritch Wolves Invitational in which the Gray Wolves will face three ranked opponents. Lourdes begins the weekend with a Great Lakes Conference match against #10 Cardinal Stritch before also facing #9 Missouri Valley on Friday. On Saturday, the Gray Wolves will meet #7 Clarke as well as Robert Morris (Ill.) in non-conference action.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 38-22 (.633) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He was named to the MAMVIC East Coach of the Year in 2012. Reitz is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cardinal Stritch is 5-0 all-time against Lourdes after defeating the Gray Wolves 3-2 at Tam-o-Shanter on Feb. 1. The Wolves won the only previous meeting in Milwaukee, Wis. 3-2 last season. Lourdes and Missouri Valley have split their first two meetings all-time. The Vikings won the first meeting this year on the court 3-1 back on Jan. 18 in Cincinnati, Ohio, but later forfeited the match due to the use of an ineligible player. Both previous meetings were on neutral courts. Clarke leads the all-time series with Lourdes 3-1 after the schools split a pair of meetings in 2013. This will be the first meeting ever at a neutral site. Lourdes holds a 5-0 edge against Robert Morris (Ill.) after downing the Eagles in four sets at Tam-o-Shanter on Jan. 31. This will be their first neutral site meeting.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves notched a 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18 victory at home against Saint Xavier on Friday.
Garrett Jones led the Gray Wolves with 15 kills while
Brad Miller had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Jo'Lon Clark added 10 kills and
CJ Rilveria had 14 digs in the win.
Scouting Cardinal Stritch: The Wolves have won six straight matches following a five-set win over Saint Xavier on Tuesday night. Noah Mader is hitting .500 with a team-high 118 kills while Tony Mack has tallied 63 digs. Collin Hartman has handed out 383 assists while Brian Hoffmann has a team-best 62 blocks on the year.
Scouting Missouri Valley: The Vikings are coming off of a four-set victory over Graceland on Tuesday evening and faces Lakeland earlier on Friday before battling Lourdes. Jacob Haar is hitting a team-leading .601 with 136 kills while Ding Hui has 106 digs. Will McCracken has handed out 317 assists while Haar also leads the team with 39 blocks.
Scouting Clarke: The Crusaders have won five straight matches following a three-set sweep at MSOE on Wednesday night. Tyler Willis has a team-leading 129 kills and is hitting .347 while Kevin Murphy has tallied 102 digs. Matt DePauw has registered 246 assists while Justin Mullady has recorded a team-best 49 blocks.
Scouting Robert Morris (Ill.): The Eagles have won two straight matches following a straight sets victory at Cincinnati Christian on Friday evening. Taylor Margorien leads Robert Morris with 91 kills and is hitting .287 while Stephen Hewitt has tallied a team-best 68 digs. Danny Orozco has handed out 254 assists while Ben Wheaton has tallied a team-high 30 blocks.
Another Libero of the Week: CJ Rilveria was named NAIA Libero of the Week after his performance against Saint Xavier last week. He tallied 14 digs, an average of 3.5 per set, and did not commit any reception errors in the victory. He is the second Gray Wolf to earn that honor this year, as
Brad Miller was the NAIA Libero of the Week on Jan. 21.
Best Start in Program History: Lourdes 7-1 record through eight matches is its best start in the three years in which the men's volleyball program has been a varsity sport at the school. The Gray Wolves were 3-5 in both 2012 and 2013 through eight contests, so even without the forfeit victory Lourdes would still be setting records.
Doing it All: Brad Miller has shown why he was a First Team All-MAMVIC East selection, playing in two roles this year, both as an outside hitter and libero. He leads the team in digs, and ranks second nationally, with 3.23 digs per set, and is hitting at a .444 clip when playing outside. He tallied his first double-double against Saint Xavier with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Battling for the Top Spot: Lourdes match at Cardinal Stritch on Friday will be for the opportunity to move into a tie for first place in the Great Lakes Conference standings with the Wolves. Cardinal Stritch handed Lourdes its lone loss this year and is undefeated in conference play. After Friday, just four league matches remain for both schools.
Captains Named: Lourdes has announced tri-captains for the 2014 season. Serving in that role are juniors
Frank Craig,
Brad Miller, and
Jo'Lon Clark.
This and That: Garrett Jones tallied a career-high 15 kills against Saint Xavier ... Lourdes has tallied 69 aces in eight matches while surrendering just 27 ... the Gray Wolves rank second nationally as a team in both aces per set (2.38) and digs per set (11.0).
