Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes is set for its annual spring break trip, which will see the Gray Wolves play five matches in six days beginning on Friday. Lourdes will play Great Lakes Conference matches at Robert Morris (Ill.) and Saint Xavier on Friday and Saturday before facing non-conference foes Lindenwood-Belleville, Culver-Stockton, and Quincy Monday through Wednesday of next week.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 41-24 (.631) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He was named to the MAMVIC East Coach of the Year in 2012. Reitz is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 5-0 all-time against Robert Morris (Ill.) after defeating the Eagles 3-1 at Tam-o-Shanter on Jan. 31. Lourdes is 7-0 all-time against Saint Xavier after a four-set win over the Cougars at Tam-o-Shanter on Feb. 7. The Gray Wolves have never met Lindenwood-Belleville, Culver-Stockton, or Quincy in men's volleyball.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes hit .458 in the opening set on the way to defeating Robert Morris (Ill.) 25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 25-21 on Jan. 31 at Tam-o-Shanter.
Jo'Lon Clark hit .531 for the Gray Wolves with 18 kills while Andre Shaw led the Eagles with 16 kills. Lourdes hit .480 in set one on Feb. 7 and defeated Saint Xavier 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18 at Tam-o-Shanter.
Brad Miller had 12 kills, hit .400 and added 10 digs for the Gray Wolves while Justin Cousin had nine kills and six digs for the Cougars.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes needed just one hour and nine minutes to sweep Siena Heights 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 on Friday evening at Tam-o-Shanter in non-conference action.
Frank Craig hit .364 with 13 kills while
Jo'Lon Clark added 11 kills in the win for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Robert Morris (Ill.): The Eagles have dropped five straight matches following a three-set sweep at Saint Xavier on Feb. 21. Taylor Margorien has 136 kills and hits a team-leading .224 while Jonathan Gomez has tallied 105 digs.
Scouting Saint Xavier: The Cougars have won two of their last three contests following a sweep at Cincinnati Christian last Saturday. Justin Cousin leads Saint Xavier with 106 kills and 59 digs this season.
Scouting Lindenwood-Belleville: The Lynx are still looking for their first win of the season after a four-set loss to Saint Ambrose on Saturday. Ethan Bohnert has tallied a team-high 101 kills. Lindenwood-Belleville plays at the Robert Morris (Ill.) tournament on Saturday for three matches before hosting Lourdes.
Scouting Culver-Stockton: The Wildcats have lost 12 straight matches following a three-set setback to McKendree on Saturday. Nick Regester has tallied 170 kills on the season while Grant Thompson has tallied 123 digs. Culver-Stockton travels to Saint Ambrose for four matches this weekend before hosting Lourdes on Tuesday.
Scouting Quincy: The Hawks have dropped two straight following a three-set loss to Lewis last Friday. Quincy travels to Grand Canyon for two matches this weekend before hosting Lourdes on Wednesday. Ian Lawson has tallied 187 kills while Brian Peth has tallied 128 digs to pace the Hawks this season.
Earning a National Ranking: The Gray Wolves moved into the top-10 of the NAIA Men's Volleyball national poll on Feb. 17th, being slotted at #10, and remains ranked #10 for the third straight week. The rankings are the first for Lourdes since the Gray Wolves finished the 2012 season ranked 10th nationally.
A Tie at the Top: Lourdes moved into a first place tie with Cardinal Stritch in the Great Lakes Conference standings after sweeping the Wolves on Feb. 14. Both schools have a two-game lead in the GLC standings with four conference tilts left to play. The Great Lakes Conference tournament will be held March 28-29 at Owens Community College, and will be hosted by Lourdes.
Best Start in Program History: Lourdes 10-3 record through 13 matches its best start in the three years in which the men's volleyball program has been a varsity sport at the school. The Gray Wolves were 6-7 in 2012 and 7-6 in 2013 through 12 contests, so even without the forfeit victory over Missouri Valley earlier this year Lourdes would still be setting records.
Captains Named: Lourdes has announced tri-captains for the 2014 season. Serving in that role are juniors
Frank Craig,
Brad Miller, and
Jo'Lon Clark.
This and That: Lourdes ranks second in NAIA averaging 11.2 digs per set while
Brad Miller is third individually at 3.06 digs per set ...
Jo'Lon Clark tallied 0.53 aces per set, fourth best in the country, while Lourdes is second as a team tallying 2.04 aces per set ... Lourdes only losses this year have come to ranked foes ... the Gray Wolves are hitting .245 as a team, led by
Chris Lockwood's .309 clip.
