Lourdes ended its five-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a 56-40 victory over Siena Heights at Tam-o-Shanter.
Â
The Gray Wolves held the Saints to just 31.3% shooting from the floor and 4-for-21 (19%) from beyond the arc. Lourdes also went 17-for-21 (81%) from the free throw line on the afternoon, scoring their final 10 points of the game from the charity stripe over the final 3:18.
Â
"Wins are tough to come by in the WHAC," head coach
Andre Smith said after the game. "We'll take this one. I thought we did a pretty good job of taking care of the basketball, especially in the second half. I thought everyone came out and played a tough, physical game tonight. We got back to some of our defensive principles tonight and played a low scoring game."
Â
Lourdes started quick on both ends of the floor, making seven of their first 10 shots offensively while holding the Saints to just four attempts and three turnovers in the first six minutes while building a 15-3 advantage. Siena Heights responded by scoring 10 of the next 12 points overall to close the game to four at the 10:20 mark, 17-13. The two teams combined to score just 16 more points the remainder of the half as Lourdes took a 27-19 lead into the locker room.
Â
After the Gray Wolves pushed the lead to nine, 36-27, with 12:20 to play, Siena Heights scored nine unanswered points to tie the game with 9:06 to play. Lourdes immediately responded, as
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) scored back-to-back layups followed by a three-point play by
Jake DuPree (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.). DuPree buried a three-pointer at the 5:35 mark to cap the 10-0 run, putting Lourdes on top 46-36 and the Gray Wolves would convert their free throws down the stretch to solidify the victory.
Â
DuPree led all scorers with 22 points, including a 9-for-9 effort from the free throw line. Steinmetz and
E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) added 10 points each with Steinmetz also pulling down a team-high seven rebounds as the Gray Wolves outboarded the Saints 34-25 for the night.Â
Otis Kemutambah (Redford, Mich./Thurston H.S.) scored a career-high eight points as well.
Â
George Goodman came off of the bench to lead Siena Heights (7-11, 3-7 WHAC) with 13 points as the only Saints player to finish the game in double figures.
Â
Lourdes (10-8, 6-4) will return to action on Wednesday evening to close out the first half of WHAC play. The Gray Wolves take on sixth-ranked Davenport at the DU Student Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich.
