Photo GalleryLourdes overcame a halftime deficit with solid defense and defeated Madonna 58-53 on Saturday afternoon at Tam-o-Shanter to open the second half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.

Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) led Lourdes with a double-double, tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds as four Gray Wolves tallied double figures.Â
E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) added 15 points and
Jake DuPree (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) tallied 14 more for Lourdes.Â
Julian Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Horizon H.S.) scored 10 points off of the bench while
Brillon Pritchett (Gary, Ind./McAdams [Miss.] H.S.) handed out seven assists and had eight rebounds.

"This was another good win for us," head coach
Andre Smith stated. "It was a defensive battle and our defense came to play. I thought we rebounded the ball well and in the end it came down to making shots and we did that tonight."

Lourdes built a 14-8 lead midway through the first half before Madonna battled back to tie the game. The Gray Wolves took a 20-16 lead with 3:33 left before the break before the Crusaders held Lourdes scoreless the rest of the half and finished on an 8-0 run to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room.

Three three-pointers to start the second half, two by DuPree and one by Steinmetz, put Lourdes on top for good. The Gray Wolves extended the lead to 12, 46-34, with a 15-4 run. Madonna clawed back, closing the gap to two in the final minute before Lourdes went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to secure the win.

Lourdes shot 40.4% from the floor on the night and 73.7% from the free throw line to offset 19 turnovers. Madonna finished shooting at a 36.5% clips and just 21.4% from three-point range. The Crusaders also were just 12-of-24 from the free throw line.

Khalil Malone and Shaun Duncan led Madonna (7-13, 3-9 WHAC) with 10 points each.

Lourdes (11-9, 7-5) will take to the road on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
