Photo GalleryFor more than 30 minutes Lourdes led the nation's ninth-ranked team in NAIA Division II on Wednesday evening, but in the end Cornerstone went on a late 9-0 run score a 67-55 victory over the Gray Wolves at Tam-o-Shanter.
Â
"I thought we gave great team effort tonight," head coach
Andre Smith said after the game. "A team like Cornerstone is battle tested though, and doesn't get rattled. We had a great opportunity for an upset but we let it slip away."
Â
Both team started slow offensively. With the game tied at nine nearly six minutes into the contest, neither school would tally a field goal again for the next five minutes until
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) knocked down an outside jumper to put the Gray Wolves in front at the 9:39 mark. The junior's jumper sparked a 13-1 run over eight minutes to put Lourdes on top 22-11. The Golden Eagles would close the gap before halftime, pulling to within 32-25 at the break.
Â
After Cornerstone hit a three to open the second half, Lourdes pushed the lead back to nine, 37-28. The Gray Wolves maintained a six to nine point lead through the midway point of the half when the Golden Eagles scored six unanswered to tie the game at 44 with 8:39 to play.
Â
Steinmetz answered with a triple and the lead see-sawed back and forth until
Noah Guthrie (Glouster, Ohio/Trimble H.S.) scored inside with 6:11 left to give Lourdes its final lead of the game, 49-48. Cornerstone answered with nine unanswered to take the lead for good, as the Gray Wolves could not close the gap in the game's final minutes.
Â
"We played hard enough to win, but not smart enough to win," Smith added. "We gave up lots of offensive rebounds which really hurt."
Â
Cornerstone outrebounded Lourdes 41-26 for the night, including 13-6 on the offensive end which led to a 17-4 advantage in second chance points.
Â
Jake DuPree (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) led Lourdes with 17 points while Steinmetz added 15 more.
Â
Kyle Steigenga led Cornerstone (18-5, 12-3 WHAC) with a double-double, scoring 25 points while grabbing 11 boards. Travis Wells added 14 while Ben Lanning scored 13 for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Lourdes (12-11, 8-7) will close out its three-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Lawrence Tech. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
