Photo GalleryLourdes closed the game on a 10-2 run to come from behind and notch a 54-48 victory over Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon at Tam-o-Shanter.
Â
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) tallied 25 points and nine rebounds, just missing a double-double to help lift the Gray Wolves to the win.
Â
"Zach carried us," head coach
Andre Smith said after the win. "Lawrence Tech is much better than their record indicates and they came in with a great game plan to slow the game down. We finally started to play defense the final three-and-a-half minutes. We had a below average effort from our guys today and they got a lot of good looks. We were fortunate that some of them did not go down."
Â
Lourdes shot 52.4% from the floor in the first half, but was just 1-for-6 from the free throw line at the break. The Gray Wolves led early 4-0 before seven straight points from the Blue Devils put the guests on top. Lourdes took the lead briefly three times the remainder of the first half before the two schools went into the locker room tied at 24.
Â
The Gray Wolves made the first two baskets in the second half to take another four-point lead before back-to-back three-pointers put Lawrence Tech on top at the 14:38 mark, 34-32. The Blue Devils maintained the lead until three straight baskets by Steinmetz put Lourdes back in front 44-43 with 4:38 left.
Â
Lawrence Tech responded with a three-pointer by Jake Mullin, but Steinmetz answered at the other end with an old-fashioned three-point play to start the game-ending run. The junior made four free throws to push the lead to five in the final minutes and the Gray Wolves continued to add on to the lead late.
Â
Steinmetz was the only Gray Wolf to finish in double figures as
Julian Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Horizon H.S.) and
E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) each added seven points off of the bench. Lourdes again shot 52.4% from the floor in the second half and finished the game with just eight turnovers.
Â
Jake Mullin led Lawrence Tech (4-20, 1-15 WHAC) with 14 points while Brad Watterworth added 10 points.

Lourdes (13-11, 9-7) will head to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Wednesday evening to battle Concordia (Mich.). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cardinal Fieldhouse.
