#2 Davenport Tops Lourdes 4-1

Hosting a nationally-ranked team for the first time in program history, Lourdes suffered a 4-1 setback to second-ranked Davenport on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

"I thought we played hard the whole game," head coach Barry Spitzer said afterwards.  "We created some chances for ourselves, but we needed to put the ball away.  There were stretches of the game that I thought we played really well, and other stretches where we played really young.

The match was scoreless until 5:23 remaining before halftime when Cam Cavanagh scored off a corner kick from TJ Ifaturoti.  The defending NAIA national champion added to its advantage just 1:41 later as Jake Love scored far post to make it 2-0 Panthers at the break.

Davenport (9-1-1, 4-0 WHAC) added to the lead in the 61st minute as Adam Farrell took a feed down the left side from Joan Nievas and scored going one-on-on with goalkeeper Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.).

Alex Mendez made it 4-0 Panthers, connecting on a free kick over the Gray Wolf wall from 32 yards out.

Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (Tamworth, England/Queen Elizabeth's Mercian H.S.) put Lourdes on the scoreboard with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, converting a penalty kick with 10:27 following a Panther foul in the penalty area.

Davenport outshot Lourdes 26-10 in the match, holding a 13-3 advantage on goal.  The Panthers also had 11 corner kick opportunities compared with just two for the Gray Wolves.

Cedillo made nine saves in goal for Lourdes while Kyler Jacobs made just two stops between the posts for the visitors.

Lourdes (4-4, 2-2) will return to the road on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Detroit, Mich. to face Marygrove.  Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
