Playing as a ranked team for the first time in program history, the 20
th-ranked Lourdes volleyball team needed just 52 minutes to score a 25-13, 25-9, 25-10 victory over Marygrove at Tam-o-Shanter to extend the Gray Wolves' winning streak to 17 straight matches.
"We served well and passed pretty well tonight," head coach
Greg Reitz stated after the win. "Our hitting was not as efficient as we'd like during the first two sets, but we really came on in the third."
The Gray Wolves tallied 10 service aces in the match while not surrendering a single one to Marygrove. Lourdes hit .346 for the contest while holding the Mustangs to a -.027 mark.
A pair of aces by
Molly Shonk (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley H.S.) spearheaded six straight points in the opening set to give Lourdes an 8-4 advantage, one the Gray Wolves would not surrender.
Lexie Curtis (Toledo, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) closed the set with two more aces as the Gray Wolves tallied five in the stanza.
Marygrove committed 11 attack errors and hit -.242 in the second set as Lourdes extended the lead to 2-0.
Stephanie Ruffing (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty H.S.) served up a 7-0 run early, putting Lourdes on top 8-2, and
Shannon Fischer (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) keyed an 11-0 spurt late as the Gray Wolves surrendered just nine points in the set.
In the third, Lourdes hit .609, tallying 15 kills on 23 swings with just one error. Fischer tallied three aces in the set, including one to close the match, and served up another 6-0 run. Shonk also was responsible for five straight points late, helping Lourdes remains one of just five undefeated teams remaining in NAIA women's volleyball.
"Shannon and
Evan Matheson (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County H.S.) both played extremely well, taking advantage of their opportunity on the court tonight," Reitz added.
Stephanie Richards (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) tallied a match-high 11 kills and hit .500 for the Gray Wolves while Ruffing added nine kills without an error and hit .529.
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) handed out 28 assists while
Michi Jimenez (Vega Baja, P.R./Juan Quirindongo Morell H.S.) registered 12 digs.
Rachel Staudt led Marygrove (2-18, 0-12 WHAC) with five kills while Erica Wilson tallied nine digs.
Lourdes (17-0, 12-0) will have a week off before concluding its three-match homestand next Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
