Lourdes Battles #3 Davenport to the Wire before Falling 70-64

Lourdes led third-ranked Davenport by two with just under seven minutes to play, but a 14-3 run by the Panthers proved to be the difference in a 70-64 victory over the Gray Wolves on Saturday afternoon at the DU Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Two free throws by Anthony Swanigan (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) gave Lourdes a 52-50 lead with 6:38 to play in the game.  Dominez Burnett scored 11 of the 14 points during the run on his way to a game-high 28 points for the Panthers.

Lourdes was able to claw back to within four with less than 30 seconds to play, but three free throws by Burnett down the stretch clinched the victory for Davenport.

Davenport led by as many as five points in the first half before a three-pointer by E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) just before intermission put the Gray Wolves on top 30-29 at the break.

A 10-3 run to open the second half by the Panthers put the hosts on top by six, but Lourdes again answered.  A three-point play followed by a triple from long range, both by Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.), tied the game at 39 with under 13 minutes to play.

The game would remain within two points either direction until Lourdes final advantage with under seven minutes to play when Davenport went on the game-winning run.

Swanigan led Lourdes with 17 points while Steinmetz came off of the bench to add 16, including making all seven of his free throw attempts.   Blackwell chipped in 13 points while Daniel Steen (Wantirna South/Australia/Emmaus H.S.) added 11 points as the Gray Wolves had four players in double figures.

Lourdes shot 43.4% from the floor while Davenport (13-2, 7-0 WHAC) connected at a 43.1% clip.  Kevin Rich tallied 13 points for the Panthers while Braima Hai added 11 to go along with Burnett's night.

Lourdes (5-5, 2-5 WHAC) will step out of conference action to face Spring Arbor on Tuesday evening.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the SAU Fieldhouse in Spring Arbor, Mich.
