Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) and
Jake DuPree (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) each tallied double-doubles on Wednesday evening to lift Lourdes to an 83-73 victory over Marygrove at Tam-o-Shanter.
Steinmetz matched a career high with 30 points while setting a new career mark with 20 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end of the floor, for his ninth double-double of the season. DuPree tallied 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, a new career high, for his second double-double of the year. He had a points and assists double-double against Akron Wayne back on Dec. 10.
"Zach played an outstanding game," head coach
Andre Smith said afterwards. "Jake showed great leadership on the floor."
Steinmetz helped Lourdes obtain an early 33-21 lead at the 5:30 mark of the first half as his rebound and basket gave him his double-double in less than 15 minutes of action. Marygrove cut into the lead before intermission though, as Diante Taylor's three-pointer as time ran down pulled the Mustangs to within 41-34 at the break.
Marygrove closed to within two, 43-41, two minutes into the second half but was never able to tie the contest over the final 20 minutes. A 12-4 run in less than three minutes pushed the lead back to 10, 55-45. Lourdes lead would grow to as many as 13, 69-56, following a Steinmetz three-point play before the Mustangs made a late surge.
A 10-2 run by the visitors cut the Marygrove deficit to six, 73-67, with under five minutes to play, but Lourdes would not allow the Mustangs to get any closer the rest of the way.
E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) scored 15 points to give the Gray Wolves three players in double figures on the night. Lourdes outrebounded Marygrove 54-34, including a 22-11 edge on the offensive end. The Gray Wolves tallied 25 second chance points and outscored the Mustangs 56-32 in the paint.
Darryll Dixon led Marygrove (3-24, 1-18 WHAC) with 18 points while Taylor added 17 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Sykes scored 15 points and Jujuan Armstrong tallied 10 more to give the Mustangs four players in double figures.
"Give Marygrove a lot of credit tonight," Smith added. "They played with a lot of heart and passion throughout."
With the victory, Lourdes (15-12, 11-8) has secured a berth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament which begins on Feb. 26. The Gray Wolves will return to action on Saturday evening, traveling to Adrian, Mich. to battle Siena Heights. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the SHU Fieldhouse.
