Photo GalleryLourdes took advantage of several Hillsdale miscues and got solid pitching on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves notched a 4-3 victory over the Chargers at Mercy Field.
                     Â
A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S) allowed just two earned runs in four innings in his start while striking out five before
Zack Zsolcsak (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) tossed 3.1 innings of no-hit relief to earn his first collegiate win (1-0).Â
Sean Koerber (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North H.S.) struck out two in the ninth to earn the save.
Â
"Our pitching was outstanding tonight," head coach
Andy Ham said. "A.J. had a very quality start and Zack was great out of the bullpen. The back end of our bullpen did a nice job as well."
Â
Hillsdale jumped on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning, only to have Lourdes answer.Â
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) walked with one out, went to second on a failed pickoff attempt, then scored on a wild pitch and the subsequent throw into left field.
Â
The Chargers retook the lead in the third before Lourdes scored three times in the bottom half of the frame.Â
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) scored on an error while
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) crossed the plate on a double by
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.). Kefalos proceeded to score on another failed pickoff attempt, the third error in the inning by Hillsdale.
Â
Hillsdale (4-11) added another run in the fourth, but would not score the rest of the game. Lourdes hurlers limited the Chargers to just one hit after the fourth inning, with that coming in the top of the ninth. The Chargers left 13 runners on base in the contest.
Â
Kefalos, Ramirez, and
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) each had two hits for the Gray Wolves in the win.
Â
"Offensively we were more aggressive with our swings tonight," Ham added. "Now we need to take this momentum into conference play this weekend."
Â
Ryan O'Hearn and Chris McDonald had two hits each in the loss for Hillsdale.

Lourdes (4-8) will open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Siena Heights. First pitch in game one is set for 4 p.m. at the SHU Baseball Diamond. The series has been moved to Friday-Saturday instead of Saturday-Sunday due to projected temperatures on Sunday.
