Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) tossed a three-hit complete game shutout in game two on Friday afternoon helping Lourdes earn a split with Siena Heights in the Gray Wolves' Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener at the SHU Baseball Diamond in Adrian, Mich.
Â
Siena Heights won the opener 4-1 before Lourdes bounced back with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Â
Lepiarz struck out nine Saints hitters and walked just one to earn him the complete game victory (2-1). He worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the second, registering back-to-back strikeouts, and then allowed just three baserunners the rest of the way.
Â
Lourdes offense plated a pair of runs in the top of the first which proved to be all that Lepiarz would need.Â
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) singled home
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) with the game's first run and
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) added a two-out RBI hit to plate
Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.).
Â
A double steal, with
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) crossing the plate, in the fourth inning made it 3-0 Lourdes and Toth scored an unearned run in the fifth following a Siena Heights throwing error.
Â
Jex and Toth each had two hits in the win as the Gray Wolves tallied six total against Siena Heights hurler Tayler Thelen, who also went the distance in the loss (1-3). Thelen allowed just two earned runs while walking four and fanning four.
Â
"This was a good split for us on day one," head coach
Andy Ham stated afterwards. "Drew was outstanding in game two. He really stepped up which is what we needed after dropping the opener. Siena Heights got the key hits when they needed them in the opener."
Â
In the opener Lourdes struck first as Toth singled home
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) in the top of the third inning.
Â
The Saints responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and added two more in the fourth, which would prove to be all the scoring in the game.
Â
Brett Vaccaro limited Lourdes to just six hits in the complete game win (1-0), striking out four and walking two.Â
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3), giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Â
Toth had two hits for the Gray Wolves in game one as Lourdes managed just the six on the afternoon.
Â
Lourdes (5-9, 1-1 WHAC) and Siena Heights (5-9, 1-3) will conclude their four-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon with another twinbill. Game one will commence at 1 p.m. at the SHU Baseball Diamond.
