Box Score Lourdes University's women's lacrosse team came up just short in its upset bid on Friday evening, dropping a 10-9 decision on the road to ninth-ranked Siena Heights at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich.
"This was our most well-rounded game we've played to date," head coach
Paul Sieben stated after the game. "Our defense was especially strong in the first half and our offense came alive in the second. I thought it was a great team effort. We did a pretty good job of containing their two leading scorers as well."
Siena Heights struck first before
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) answered for the Gray Wolves, tying the game less than five minutes into the contest. The Saints retook the lead midway through the first half only to have Long respond again less than four minutes later. Siena Heights tallied two goals in the final nine minutes of the first half though to take a 4-2 lead into the locker room.
Faith Fisher (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) tallied a goal just 29 seconds out of the intermission to cut the Lourdes deficit in half before Long tied the contest at four with 26:40 to play, starting a flurry of goals. After Siena Heights retook the lead 1:36 later, Long tallied her fourth marker of the game at the 24:30 mark to retie the game.
Kelsey Schiel (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) put Lourdes in front as she found the back of the cage with 18:39 to play, only to have the Saints answer a minute later. Goals by
Mackenzie Moriarty (Roseville, Minn./Roseville H.S.) and
Haley Brown (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on top again with 9:06 remaining, but Lourdes would not hold onto the lead.
Three straight goals by Siena Heights gave the Saints a two-goal advantage with less than four minutes to play, and despite Long's fifth goal of the game with 1:59 to play, Lourdes could not rally one more time.
Sabrina Snow tallied three goals to lead Siena Heights (5-2, 3-2 WHAC) as the Saints held a 23-21 shots advantage in the game.
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made six saves in the cage for the Gray Wolves while Tabitha Ferguson made seven stops in net for Siena Heights.
Lourdes (2-5, 0-5) will return to action on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech. The opening draw is set for 6:30 p.m. at Maumee Valley Country Day School.
