Photo GalleryLourdes continued its stretch of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games on Wednesday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Indiana Tech by scores of 13-4 and 8-1 at Mercy Field.
Â
"Give Indiana Tech all of the credit today," head coach
Andy Ham said. "College baseball is a long season and sometimes you just need to grind through it. That's where we're at right now. I think we need to relax at the plate a little bit and let things come to us. We're trying to force the issue at times."
Â
In the opener Indiana Tech plated a run in the opening inning before Lourdes took the lead in the fourth, batting around in the frame.Â
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) drove home
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one.Â
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) drew a bases loaded walk to force home
Nate Snow (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde H.S.) to give the Gray Wolves the lead and
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) added a pair of runs with a single to left-center.
Â
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) allowed just one hit from the second throw fifth innings before being touched for a pair of runs in the sixth. He left with the lead after surrendering just three runs and three hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Â
"Drew was definitely a bright spot for us today," Ham added. "He pitched a good ball game. We just couldn't hold the lead for him."
Â
Indiana Tech sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh and nine more in the eighth, scoring five times in each inning. The Warriors took advantage of a pair of Gray Wolf errors in each frame to rally and win.
Â
Blake Converset earned the win (1-1) out of the bullpen, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while striking out three.Â
Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) suffered the loss (0-4), allowing five runs, two of which were earned in one-third of an inning.
Â
Brian Hakes went 2-for-3 with a triple, an eighth-inning three-run home run, and four runs batted in to pace the Warriors in the opener. Jex had two of Lourdes' six hits in game one.
Â
Game two saw Indiana Tech (9-10, 5-3 WHAC) score in each inning from the second to the sixth in jumping out to an 8-0 lead. Peyton Newsom went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Romer Portes also had three hits as part of the team's 12-hit attack.
Â
Lourdes scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth as three straight singles by
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barterton H.S.), Jex, and
Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) produced the tally.
Â
Kefalos went 2-for-2 in the contest with a double as Lourdes managed just five hits in the game.
