Lourdes began its final home series of the season on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of a twinbill to Cornerstone 13-7 and 6-4 at Mercy Field.
Â
The Golden Eagles wasted little time jumping on top in the opening inning of game one, scoring five times to build a lead they would not relinquish.
Â
Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard with a RBI double in the fourth, but Cornerstone responded with single runs in the fifth and seventh as well as two runs in the sixth to push the lead to 9-1.
Â
After the Golden Eagles added three more runs in the top of the eighth,
Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, the first round-tripper of the season for the Gray Wolves.Â
Â
Lourdes added four late runs in the ninth, two on a double by
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.), one on a groundout by
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.), and another on a single by
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.).
Â
Jex, Kefalos, and
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) each had two hits for the Gray Wolves, which tallied 10 hits in the game.
Â
Brandon Willard earned the win (4-1) for Cornerstone with eight innings of three-run, six-hit baseball. He struck out seven and walked two.Â
Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) suffered the loss (2-5), pitching just the opening inning.
Â
Cornerstone scored first in the opening inning of game two as well before Lourdes tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Laranga singled, stole second, and scored on Jex' RBI single.Â
Â
After the Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the second, the Gray Wolves retied the game in the third on a wild pitch which plated
Nick Mazgay (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.).
Â
Cornerstone took the lead for good in the fifth with three runs and added another in the sixth.
Â
Lourdes scored single runs in the fifth and seventh, before coming up short. Mazgay scored on another wild pitch in the fifth while Kefalos delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh which plated Laranga.
Â
Kefalos finished the game with three hits while Jex had two more as the duo combined for half of the team's safeties.Â
Â
Jon Knapp tossed a complete game victory (4-5) for the Golden Eagles while
A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) suffered the loss (1-3), surrendering five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings on the hill.
Â
Lourdes (11-32, 5-22 WHAC) and Cornerstone (22-27, 13-17) will close out the Gray Wolves' home slate on Saturday with another doubleheader. The start time has been moved up to 11 a.m. to avoid potential weather moving in during the afternoon. Senior Day activities will take place prior to game one.
