Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (Tamworth, England/Queen Elizabeth's Mercian H.S.) with 3:58 remaining in overtime to give Lourdes a 3-2 victory over Grace Bible on Friday afternoon at Velting Field in Wyoming, Mich. in the first match in the Gray Wolves' program history.
Â
Kirchoff-Sleet fired a hard shot from the left side of the box that Tigers' goalkeeper Drew Smith was able to block, but Darosa picked up the rebound in the box and fired it home for the match-winner.
Â
"I'm glad we were able to get the first game jitters out of the way," head coach
Barry Spitzer said following the win. "We played as a young team today, but we had a lot of heart and hard work to pull out the win."
Â
Kirchoff-Sleet and Darosa teamed up on the first goal in program history as well at the 11:10 mark of the first half. Darosa played the ball wide to
Akilla Arno (Omaha, Neb./Northwest Magnet H.S.) who sent a cross to the left side where Kirchoff-Sleet found the back of the net.
Â
Daniel Sischo tied the match 24 minutes into the contest, and the match was even heading into intermission despite an 11-2 shot advantage for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Grace Bible (1-1) took the lead just 2:22 out of the break as Sischo scored his second marker of the match, and fifth in two contests, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
Â
Lourdes wasted little time evening the match as
Carlos Viganoni (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Western H.S.) scored just 14 seconds later from just outside of the 18-yard box. The match would remain even at two until overtime.
Â
The Gray Wolves outshot Grace Bible 23-8 for the match, including a 10-5 advantage on goal, and held an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks. Smith made seven saves in goal for the Tigers while
Mark Darling (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin H.S.) earned his first collegiate victory for Lourdes, making a pair of saves between the posts.
Â
Lourdes (1-0) will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 5, as the Gray Wolves host Walsh in the first home match in program history. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
