Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes University, ranked seventh in the preseason NAIA national poll, opens its fifth season of men's collegiate volleyball season this week as the Gray Wolves travel to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before hosting the Lourdes Invitational on Friday and Saturday where the Gray Wolves will play four matches.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fifth season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 68-37 (.648) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He was named to the MAMVIC East Coach of the Year in 2012 and the Great Lakes Conference Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015. Reitz is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Lawrence Tech have never met on the volleyball court. Clarke holds a 5-1 edge all-time in a series that dates back to Feb. 17, 2012. The two schools last met in 2014 in the NAIA National Invitational, a 3-1 Crusaders advantage. This is Clarke's first trip to Tam-o-Shanter. Lourdes is 9-1 all-time against Robert Morris (Ill.) dating back to Jan. 28, 2012 after winning both matches last season. The Gray Wolves are 4-0 all-time against the Eagles at Tam-o-Shanter. Lourdes holds a 12-0 series advantage against Siena Heights dating back to Feb. 14, 2012. The Gray Wolves swept all three matches in 2015 against the Saints, and are 6-0 against Siena Heights at Tam-o-Shanter.
Wrapping Up 2015: The Gray Wolves finished the 2015 campaign with a 20-9 record overall and a perfect 14-0 mark in the Great Lakes Conference to win the regular season title. The Gray Wolves advanced to the GLC tournament championship match before falling in four sets to Cardinal Stritch.Â
Frank Craig was named the GLC Player of the Year, while
Amaury Miranda was the Newcomer and Setter of the Year.Â
Greg Reitz was named the GLC Coach of the Year. Craig and
Jo'Lon Clark were named First Team All-GLC while
Brad Miller was a Second Team All-GLC pick. Â
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils are playing their first match in program history against the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Clarke: The Crusaders went 28-8 in 2015 and posted an 8-2 record in the North Conference before falling to Saint Ambrose in five sets in the league tournament. Anson Lindsey is the team's top returning hitter, having tallied 171 kills last year.
Scouting Robert Morris (Ill.): The Eagles opened the season with a 3-0 sweep of Calumet on Jan. 13. Paris McFall led Robert Morris with 13 kills while Dalton Tucker had 14 digs. The Eagles went 16-12 in 2015.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints posted a 12-12 record in 2015 and went 6-8 in the Great Lakes Conference. Tyler Hubbard-Neil is the team's top returning offensive threat, having amassed 180 kills one season ago.
Lourdes in Season Openers: The Gray Wolves are 3-1 all-time in their season openers. Lourdes lost its inaugural match of the 2012 season 3-0 to #1 Saint Ambrose, but swept Robert Morris (Ill.) in three sets at home to begin the 2013 campaign and won by the same score at Cincinnati Christian to open 2014. Last year the Gray Wolves needed five sets to defeat #10 Robert Morris (Ill.) to kick off the year.
More on Openers: Lourdes is also 3-1 all-time in conference openers, as the Gray Wolves first match each season has been against a league foe. The Gray Wolves are 3-1 in home openers as well. Lourdes hosted Saint Ambrose and Robert Morris (Ill.) to begin the 2012 and 2013 seasons at home in season opening matches as well before opening up the 2014 home campaign with a victory over Siena Heights at Tam-o-Shanter. Last year Lourdes opened at home with the win over Robert Morris.
Facing Ranked Opponents: Lourdes is 8-31 all-time against teams ranked in the top-10. Last season the Gray Wolves posted a 3-5 mark against ranked foes. Lourdes defeated #10 Robert Morris (Ill.), #6 Saint Ambrose, and #5 Grand View. The Gray Wolves have never defeated a team ranked higher than #5.
The Mideast Conference: NAIA has reshuffled its conferences yet again heading into 2016. The Gray Wolves will play a double round-robin slate against Cincinnati Christian, Lawrence Tech, and Siena Heights in the quest for a league crown. NAIA men's volleyball has moved from four conferences to five conferences in 2016.
