Niki Meyer (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center H.S.) scored a career-high 23 points on Saturday afternoon, but Lourdes shot just 36.4% from the floor as a team and suffered a 75-56 setback to Madonna at Tam-o-Shanter.
Â
Meyer made four three-point field goals as part of her effort, and handed out a team-high five assists as well for the Gray Wolves. Her scoring output was the highest for any Lourdes player this season.
Â
Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) and
Constance Conner (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush H.S.) each added 12 points for the Gray Wolves, pulling down seven and six rebounds respectively.
Â
"You have to make shots to bring them out of their zone, and for the most part we did not do that today," head coach
Karen McConnell said afterwards. "Niki seems to be a bit more confident shooting the ball over the last two games though, leading the team in scoring. We also got some nice play from CC and
Payton Ramey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas H.S.) off of the bench."
Â
Madonna used an 8-1 run midway through the opening quarter to help the Crusaders build an 18-11 advantage after the opening 10 minutes. A 13-0 run spanning the first two periods allowed the guests to increase the lead to 16, 27-11, before eight straight points by the Gray Wolves, six by Conner, pulled Lourdes back to within single digits. Madonna scored the final five points of the half to take a 37-23 lead into the locker room.
Â
Lourdes shot just 30.3% over the first 20 minutes, making just 4-of-16 shots in the first quarter, while committing five second period turnovers. The Crusaders capitalized the seven total first half turnovers into 11 points.
Â
The run, which started in the second period, extended into the second half, as Madonna scored 15 of 17 points to push the lead to 47-25 with six minutes remaining in the third. The Crusaders had eight offensive boards in the quarter and led by 18, 56-38, heading into the final 10 minutes.Â
Â
The Gray Wolves were only able to close to within 15 in the final stanza before another 9-0 run by Madonna put the game out of reach.Â
Â
Lindsey Hernden made five three-pointers on her way to a team-high 21 points for Madonna (4-8, 4-4 WHAC) while Becca Sabol added 19 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocked shots. The Crusaders shot 46.6% from the floor and made 10 triples on the afternoon.
Â
Lourdes (4-11, 1-7) will remain at home on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
