Turnovers Costly as Lourdes Women Fall to Northwestern Ohio

Lourdes committed 30 turnovers on Wednesday evening against Northwestern Ohio, which proved to be more than the Gray Wolves could overcome, falling to the Racers 67-45 at Tam-o-Shanter.

"You can't turn the ball over 30 times and expect to win," head coach Karen McConnell said afterwards.  "We didn't come out with a great effort at times."

The game started slow for both schools, as Lourdes led just 2-0 more than five minutes into the game as the two teams combined to shoot 1-for-12 from the floor and commit 12 turnovers.  The Gray Wolves led 7-4 after the opening 10 minutes, holding Northwestern Ohio to just 2-of-12 shooting for the period.

A Lindsey Motycka (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) three-pointer pushed the Gray Wolf lead to four, 10-6, early in the second before a 12-2 run by the Racers put the guests in front for good.  Andrea Hodge (Westerville, Ohio/Central H.S.) hit a jumper just before halftime to pull Lourdes within six, 22-16, at the break.

"I thought we had one of our best defensive rotations all year in the first half," McConnell added.  "As bad as we were offensively, were still in the game because of our defense."

Lourdes committed 18 turnovers in the first half and shot just 36.8% from the floor, but Northwestern Ohio was limited to just 39.3% shooting and failed to make a three-pointer in the first 20 minutes.

A 14-4 run beginning midway through the third quarter allowed the Racers to pull away as Northwestern Ohio scored 26 points in the period.  The Racers shot 66.7% from the floor while forcing seven Gray Wolf turnovers which led to 12 points in the frame.  The guests led 48-30 heading into the final 10 minutes.

After Lourdes scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, Northwestern Ohio held the Gray Wolves scoreless from the field for nearly seven minutes, going on an 11-1 run which eliminated any thoughts Lourdes had of a late rally.

Molea Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison H.S.) led Lourdes with 11 points off of the bench, making 5-of-6 shots from the floor.  Motycka and Constance Conner (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush H.S.) added eight points each, with Conner also pulling down seven rebounds.  Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) had a game-high nine rebounds for the Gray Wolves.

Stacia Allen led Northwestern Ohio (9-8, 6-3 WHAC) with 13 points while Sogona Sidibe and Eboni Adams added 12 points each.  The Racers shot 50.9% from the floor for the game after connecting at a 62.1% clip in the second half.

Lourdes (4-12, 1-8) will take to the road on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves head to Adrian, Mich. to face Siena Heights.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the SHU Fieldhouse.
