Playing its second ranked opponent in three games and fifth top-25 foe of the season, Lourdes dropped a 74-61 road contest to 16
th-ranked Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
Lourdes shot 51.1% and committed just nine turnovers on the afternoon, but Cornerstone connected at an even high percentage, 56%, including 10-of-20 from three-point range to earn the victory.
Â
The Gray Wolves never led in the game, but trailed just 22-17 with under seven minutes to play in the first half before the Golden Eagles ran off nine straight points to take a double figure. Cornerstone eventually took a 38-24 lead into halftime.
Â
The lead grew to as many as 17 early in the second half before Lourdes slowly battled back. Eight straight points cut the deficit to single digits, 49-41, at the 12:30 mark, but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way. Cornerstone extended the lead back to 14, and even with one more push, Lourdes would only get within eight down the stretch, 69-61, with 2:24 remaining.
Â
E.J. Blackwell (Rochester, Pa./Rochester H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with 18 points, making three triples, while
Julian Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Horizon H.S.) added 15 points and had five assists.Â
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) added 14 points, giving the Gray Wolves three double figure scorers.
Â
Cory Cox led Cornerstone (16-5, 11-3 WHAC) with 21 points while Kyle Steigenga registered a double-double, finishing the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
Lourdes (8-13, 3-11) will continue its three-game road trip on Wednesday evening, heading to Dearborn, Mich. Tip-off against Michigan-Dearborn is set for 7:30 p.m. at the UMD Fieldhouse.
