Lourdes Holds off Michigan-Dearborn for WHAC Victory

Lourdes built a 16-point halftime lead and held off a late Michigan-Dearborn rally to defeat the Wolverines 49-46 on Wednesday evening at the UMD Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.

The Gray Wolves held Michigan-Dearborn to just 28.9% shooting from the floor and forced 23 Wolverine turnovers.

After the Wolverines scored the game's first five points, Lourdes responded with a 10-3 run, and built a 14-10 lead after one period.  The Gray Wolves scored the first 11 points of the second, capped with back-to-back threes by Lindsey Motycka (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) and Mariah DuPree (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) to increase the lead to 15 points.

Lourdes took a 33-17 lead into the locker room after shooting 48.3% from the floor.  Motycka and Constance Conner (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush H.S.) each scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes.

"We came out ready to play today and made some perimeter shots," head coach Karen McConnell said afterwards.

The lead remained 12, 39-27, after the third period, but the Wolverines made their run in the fourth.  An 11-3 run over six minutes brought the hosts to within five, 45-40, at the 2:20 mark.  Michigan-Dearborn cut the deficit to three with seven seconds left, and after two missed Lourdes free throws had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but the triple try missed the mark.

"In the second half, they played a 1-3-1 zone and we struggled at times," McConnell added.  "We did hit some shots at critical times though.  It was like we played not to lose instead of to win, but we are happy to get the victory."

Motycka led Lourdes with 15 points while Conner finished with 10 as the two players to tally double figures.  Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, but the Gray Wolves were outrebounded 41-33 for the game.

Marisa Sauve led Michigan-Dearborn (1-21, 1-14 WHAC) with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Lourdes (6-16, 3-12) concludes its road trip on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against 16th-ranked Lawrence Tech at the Ridler Fieldhouse in Southfield, Mich.
