Indiana Tech jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and Lourdes was never able to rally on Saturday as the Gray Wolves dropped a 6-1 decision to the Warriors to open a three-game weekend series at Mercy Field.
Â
Lourdes managed just five hits in the contest, and put two runners on base in the same inning just once, the fourth when the Gray Wolves scored their lone run.
Â
Trailing 4-0,
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error. He scored on a two-out single by
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.).
Â
The Gray Wolves put a runner in scoring position in four different innings starting with the fourth, but were unable to plate any more runs.
Â
"Offensively we're going to continue to struggle until we learn to execute with runners in scoring position," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards.
Â
Indiana Tech scored three runs in the opening inning after loading the bases with three walks. A two-run single by Peyton Newsom and a run-scoring hit by Matt Bandor made it 3-0 before Lourdes came to bat. A sacrifice fly off of the bat of Ryan Meisenheimer in the fourth added to the lead.
Â
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) started and worked four innings, suffering the loss (0-2). He allowed the four runs and four hits while walking four and striking out three.Â
Frank Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) came on with two innings of scoreless relief, and
Ben Richard (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) threw the final three innings fanning four. The Warriors scored two runs in the ninth off of Richard.
Â
"Matt rebounded well after a rough first inning," Snow said. "Our two freshman came in from the bullpen and did a great job for us to try to keep us in the game."
Â
Childress finished with two of the five hits for Lourdes on the afternoon, while also stealing a base in addition to his RBI. Newsome finished 4-for-5 with three RBI to pace the Warrior offense.
Â
Lourdes (0-4, 0-4 WHAC) and Indiana Tech (3-1, 3-1 WHAC) will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is slated for 11 a.m. at Mercy Field.
