Cornerstone scored the only goal of the match on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium, defeating Lourdes 1-0 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
Allyn Anthony sent a long ball into the box from midfield and Josue Uquillas got a foot on it, and put it in the back of the net at the 58:39 mark for what became the match-winner.
"This was a disappointing match," head coach
Barry Spitzer said afterwards. "We just seemed to put forth an uninspired effort this afternoon."
The two sides played a scoreless opening 45 minutes despite the Golden Eagles outshooting Lourdes 10-3 overall, but 4-3 on frame. Cornerstone (9-4-2, 5-1-2 WHAC) finished the match outshooting the Gray Wolves 17-7 for the match, including 9-4 on goal, and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities, with all five of Lourdes coming in the final 45 minutes.
Carlos Viganoni (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Western H.S.) was the only Lourdes player with more than one shot, as both of his attempts were saved by Dary Dewalt, who finished with four stops in the shutout.
Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.) made seven saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (6-5-1, 5-1-2) will take to the road on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Southfield, Mich. to battle Lawrence Tech. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at the LTU Athletic Field.
