Tyler Rogers (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach H.S.) scored his first collegiate goal on Wednesday afternoon, but Lourdes fell one goal short in its home finale, falling 2-1 to Michigan-Dearborn at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
Trailing 2-0 late in the second half, Rogers fired a shot from the right wing about 30 yards out which slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Tristan Johnson and across the goal line, pulling the Gray Wolves within one with 11:30 to play.
Â
Lourdes had a shot to tie the contest with under three minutes to play as
Haggi Amirally (Kinshasa, Congo/Byron Nelson H.S.) had a chance inside, but Johnson made a sliding save to preserve the victory.
Â
"I was proud of the way we played down the stretch," head coach
Barry Spitzer said after the match. "The problem is we started way too slow and dug ourselves too big of a hole."
Â
The Gray Wolves had the first quality chance to take the lead in the match less than seven minutes into the contest as
Kevin Omore (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Saint Jean Bosco and Farandole Internationale H.S.) was in alone on Johnson, but the netminder came out of the goal and made a diving stop.
Â
Michigan-Dearborn responded with the first goal of the day, as Richard Hodnicki reached the goal line and slotted a ball across into the six where Matt McCourt got a touch on it and found the back of the net.
Â
Akilla Arno (Omaha, Neb./Northwest Magnet H.S.) looked to knot the contest with just over five minutes to play, but his shot hit the post on the far side. The Wolverines took the 1-0 lead into intermission despite being outshot 8-3 over the opening 45 minutes.
Â
The Wolverines doubled the lead with 20:51 to play as Hodnicki converted a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area following a corner kick.
Â
Lourdes outshot the Wolverines 15-5 on the evening, but held just a 5-4 edge on net. Johnson made four saves for Michigan-Dearborn (4-10, 2-8 WHAC) while
Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.) had two saves for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Lourdes (6-8-1, 1-8-1) will close out its 2016 season on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Concordia (Mich.). Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Cardinal Field.
