Lourdes picked up its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Marygrove at Jimmy Johns Field in Utica, Mich. The Gray Wolves dropped the opener 5-3 before rebounding for a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.
"It was nice to finally get our first win out of the way," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "The difference in game one and game two was that we got our leadoff runners on in the second game, and that proved to help us score."
In the opener, Marygrove jumped in front with a run in the third before Lourdes tied the game one-half inning later.
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central H.S.) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by
Noah Childress (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.).
The Mustangs took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring three times, including a two-run home run by William DaCosta. The Gray Wolves pulled within one in the seventh as
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) scored on a throwing error before a
Jonathan Barker (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) sacrifice fly plated Childress.
Marygrove added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on the way to secure the win.
Crabtree and Childress each had two hits for the Gray Wolves, combining for four of the team's six hits. Da Costa went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in for Marygrove in the opener.
Chris Nelson went the distance on the mound to earn the win (1-1), striking out five while allowing just two earned runs.
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, two of which were earned, in five innings. He allowed three hits, walked three, and fanned four.
In game two,
Kolby Rogge (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) took a perfect game into the fifth before allowing a two-out double. He went seven innings, allowing just one unearned run and four hits while striking out five to earn his first collegiate victory (1-2).
"Kyle pitched really well," Snow added. "It was great for him to get that first college win."
Lourdes scored first in the opening inning, as
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and third on a wild pitch. Stanley would score as Riggs reached on an error, making it 1-0 Gray Wolves.
Marygrove tied the game with an unearned run in the seventh via a sacrifice fly, but Lourdes would retake the lead in the eighth on a two-run home run by Riggs, which plated Childress as well.
The Gray Wolves batted around in the ninth, adding four insurance runs. Pastor and Crabtree both had two-run singles to help secure the victory.
Childress went 3-for-5 in the nightcap with two runs scored as Lourdes tallied eight hits. Joseph Slivik suffered the loss (0-1) for the Mustangs on the hill, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, and four hits in 7.1 innings of work while striking out nine.
Lourdes (1-7, 1-7 WHAC) and Marygrove (3-4, 3-4) will close out the three-game weekend series, and the fall schedule, on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon at Jimmy Johns Field.
