Lourdes Runs into Tough Competition at JCU Duels

Final Results

Lourdes returned to the mat on Sunday for the JCU Duels, but the Gray Wolves were unable to post their first victory in program history, dropping all four contests at the DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio.

Lourdes fell 45-0 to host John Carroll in the opening match, dropped a 48-6 decision to Lycoming in match two, suffered a 32-15 defeat in the third contest against Alfred State, and rounded out the day with a 52-3 setback to Otterbein.

"This was an immensely tough day competing against quality competition," head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards.  "Although the overall team scores don't reflect the effort that was put forth in the matches, I am still optimistic that we can build upon many of the tough lessons that was realized today.  We will will take a few days to heal up and recover before turning our attention to the next match."

In the opening match against John Carroll (1-1), the Blue Streaks recorded four falls against the Gray Wolves and three major decisions.  Garrett Carter (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Saint Vincent-Saint Mary H.S.) had the closest match for Lourdes, falling at 149 pounds in an 8-5 decision.

The Gray Wolves registered one victory against Lycoming (2-0) in the second contest of the day as Tyler Roberts (Hudson, Mich./Hudson H.S.) registered a fall at the 4:09 mark in the 133-pound weight class, the first pin registered by a Gray Wolf in program history.  The Warriors registered six falls of their own on the way to the win.

Lourdes jumped out to a 15-9 lead after four bouts against Alfred State (1-3), but the Pioneers rallied over the final six weight classes to earn the match victory.  Lane Trapp (Alexandria, Ala./Alexandria H.S.) earned his first win as a Gray Wolf, an 8-7 decision at 125 pounds.  For Trapp, Sunday also marked his first collegiate competition joining the squad following a successful cross country season for Lourdes.  Roberts and Carter both via forfeit for the Gray Wolves at 133 and 149 respectively for Lourdes' other points in the match.

The final contest of the day saw Otterbein (5-0) record seven falls and a major decision on the way to the win.  Carter posted the lone Gray Wolf win at 149, a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals for his fourth victory of the season, matching Roberts for the team lead individually.

Lourdes (0-6) will take more than two weeks off from competition before returning to action on Nov. 29 against Baldwin-Wallace.  The match will begin at 7 p.m. in Urspring Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.
