Wrestling made its intercollegiate debut on the Lourdes campus on Saturday afternoon, and while the Gray Wolves jumped out to an early lead, Ohio Valley rallied to defeat the hosts 33-9 at the Franciscan Center Gymnasium.
Â
"We were overwhelmed by the showing of support from our fans today," head coach
Dock Kelly III said after the match. "It was absolutely outstanding and beyond our imagination for what our first match would be like."
Â
The Gray Wolves started strong, winning three of the first four matches before the Fighting Scots made their comeback in the upper weight classes.
Â
"I thought we wrestled very well early," Kelly added. "The lightweights set the tone heading into intermission. It was disappointing to end up on the short end of the final score, but I was proud of the overall effort of the entire team."
Â
Ray Porter (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville H.S.), the first Gray Wolf to step on the match in program history, gave the fans a reason to cheer early, scoring a 5-1 decision over Anthony Tripke in the 125-pound weight class. After a scoreless opening period, Porter took control in the second with three points, not yielding one to his opponent until the third.
Â
Tyler Roberts (Hudson, Mich./Hudson H.S.) made it two straight wins for Lourdes with a 4-2 decision over Colton Nangle at 133 pounds. He extended his lead in the final period after taking a 2-1 lead into the final stanza.
Â
After Ohio Valley (1-0) won at 141 pounds,
Garrett Carter (Macedonia, Ohio/Saint Vincent-Saint Mary H.S.) jumped in front early with four first period points and defeated Eli Stewart 4-2, giving the Gray Wolves a 9-3 advantage in the match.
Â
The Fighting Scots responded with three straight falls, two coming in the third period and one in the first to take control. Lourdes'
Noah Nuno (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga H.S.) battled Austin Antill in a close match at 184 pounds before falling 6-5, with nearly all of the scoring coming in the third after Antill took a 1-0 lead into the third.
Â
After Ohio Valley won via forfeit at 197 pounds, Ben Willard gave the Fighting Scots one final victory in a low-scoring affair, 2-1, over
Drew Hoskinson (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville H.S.).
Â
Lourdes will return to the mat on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves head to New Concord, Ohio to face Muskingum. The opening bout is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center.
