Lourdes limited Carlow to just 23 second half points, including only five in the third quarter, to rebound from a halftime deficit to defeat the Celtics 80-65 on Tuesday evening at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"It was nice to end the semester with a win," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said after the victory. "Now we're ready for a much needed break to refocus for conference play."
Â
The Gray Wolves trailed 42-38 at the intermission, and both teams started slow in the third quarter. Lourdes closed the quarter on a 10-0 run over the final three minutes to carry a 54-47 lead into the final stanza. The Gray Wolves held Carlow to just 1-of-12 (8.3%) shooting from the floor in the third, while forcing seven turnovers in the 10 minutes.
Â
"We played much better defense in the second half," Quesenberry added. "Holding them to just five points in the third was impressive, and I think that was the difference in the game."
Â
Carlow was unable to get any closer than five points in the final period, and after doing so to pull within 61-56, saw the Gray Wolves answer with eight of the next 10 points as part of a 15-6 run to put the game out of reach.
Â
The game was tight from the opening tip, but the Celtics closed the opening quarter with three three-pointers in the final minute of the period to take a 24-18 lead after 10 minutes of play. Carlow increased its lead to seven to start the second, but Lourdes went on an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to regain the lead 35-33. The Celtics responded with seven straight points on the way to building the halftime advantage.
Â
Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led four Gray Wolves in double figures, finishing the night with 18 points, while
Kalena Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) added 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.Â
Daja Whiteside (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale H.S.) contributed 13 points while
Payton Ramey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas H.S.) came off of the bench to match her career-high with 10 points.
Â
Lourdes shot 40.6% from the floor but committed just 14 turnovers and outrebounded the Celtics 45-42 for the night.
Â
"We took much better care of the ball tonight," Quesenberry commented.
Â
Emaa Stille led Carlow (5-5) with 18 points and 19 rebounds while Reanna Turner chipped in 17 points. Alexis Yanief added 14 points and seven assists for the Celtics.
Â
Lourdes (5-11) will take 15 days off from action before returning to the hardwood on Jan. 4 when the Gray Wolves travel to Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Racer Gymnasium in Lima, Ohio.
