Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) tallied a double-double, and Lourdes outscored Marygrove 23-11 in the third period as the Gray Wolves defeated the Mustangs 76-57 on Wednesday evening at the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit, Mich.
Fidler finished the game with 21 points and 15 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end. The sophomore shot 9-of-12 from the floor.
"They had a hard time stopping Fid," head coach
Karen McConnell said afterwards. "She did a good job of moving and flashing on offense."
Lourdes was able to overcome 36.8% shooting for the game, including just 4-of-23 (17.4%) from three-point range, by holding the Mustangs to a 28.4% shooting clip from the floor. Marygrove made just 3-of-25 (12%) from beyond the arc.
The Gray Wolves never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 13-6 lead midway through the opening quarter before taking a 15-12 lead into the second period. A 10-0 run over three minutes in the second period allowed Lourdes to extend the lead to 30-14, before the Mustangs responded with a 10-1 spurt of their own before intermission. Lourdes took a 34-28 lead into the locker room.
After Marygrove cut the lead to four on the first possession of the third, Lourdes scored eight unanswered points to start a 17-4 run, and built a 53-34 advantage with 2:49 to play in the quarter following a
Kaitlyn Kavanaugh (Cardington, Ohio/Cardington H.S.) three-point play.
"I thought Kaitlyn had a nice game," McConnell added. "She is starting to get back in the grove after coming back from her injury."
Lourdes went on one final 10-0 run in the fourth quarter, and built a lead as large as 27 before the Mustangs chipped away back to make the final margin 19.
Molea Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison H.S.) scored 12 points off of the bench for Lourdes while
Mariah DuPree (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) and
Rachel Losey (Otter Lake, Mich./Otter Lake H.S.) each added eight points.
Constance Conner (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush H.S.) pulled down eight rebounds as Lourdes outboarded Marygrove 65-45 on the night.
Elisha Major led Marygrove (4-23, 1-18 WHAC) with 20 points while Breanna Thomas added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Teonna Pope chipped in 12 points and handed out nine assists.
Lourdes (7-19, 4-15) will continue its three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Livonia, Mich. to face Madonna. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at The Activities Center.
