Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes concludes its three-match homestand this week with a pair of contests. The Gray Wolves host Siena Heights in Mideast Conference play on Wednesday night at Tam-o-Shanter before entertaining Cardinal Stritch in non-league action on Friday night in a match to be played at Springfield High School.
On the Air: Wednesday's match against Siena Heights will be broadcast by BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The match will air on Thursday at 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. as well as on Friday at 3 p.m. In addition, BCSN2 will show the match on Wednesday night at 11:30 p.m., Thursday at 3 p.m., Friday at 7 a.m., and Saturday at 3:30 a.m.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his fifth season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball,
Greg Reitz has a 76-38 (.667) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. He was named to the MAMVIC East Coach of the Year in 2012 and the Great Lakes Conference Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015. Reitz is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 13-0 all-time against Siena Heights in a series that dates back to Feb. 14, 2012. The Gray Wolves defeated the Saints in four sets on Jan. 23 earlier this season in the final match of the Lourdes Invitational. Lourdes holds a 6-0 series advantage in matches played at Tam-o-Shanter. Cardinal Stritch holds a 6-4 series edge over the Gray Wolves dating back to Jan. 27, 2012. Lourdes won two of three matches between the two schools last season, with the Wolves winning the final contest in the championship of the Great Lakes Conference tournament. The Gray Wolves are 2-4 in the series when hosting Cardinal Stritch.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes hit .252 on Jan. 23 as the Gray Wolves notched a 25-16, 15-25, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Siena Heights in the final match of the Lourdes Invitational.Â
Eric Ubior hit .423 with 13 kills and 11 digs and
Zachary Hawkins added 13 kills and 11 digs for the Gray Wolves while Tyler Hubbard-Neil paced the Saints with 16 kills. Â
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes held Lawrence Tech to -.195 hitting on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves notched a 25-5, 25-16, 25-10 victory at
Tam-o-Shanter.Â
Zachary Hawkins led Lourdes with 12 kills and hit .556 while
CJ Rilveria tallied 13 digs defensively. The Gray Wolves hit .274 as a team and outdug the Blue Devils 33-22.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won six straight matches after sweeping Davenport and Calumet last weekend. Tyler Hubbard-Neil leads Siena Heights with 93 kills while Jeff Hardman has handed out 248 assists. John Kalugar has registered a team-high 20 aces and 88 digs while Zach Haube has recorded a team-best 27 blocks.
Scouting Cardinal Stritch: The Wolves enter the week on the heels of a straight sets loss to #10 Robert Morris (Ill.) last Tuesday. Cardinal Stritch visits Saint Xavier on Tuesday before heading to Lourdes. Connor O'Ryan leads the offense with 118 kills while Nick Bartlett has handed out a team-high 235 assists. Joe Duda has recorded 20 service aces while Patrick Ronan has a team-best 127 digs on the year. Iwan Smith is the Wolves' blocks leader with 23 thus far.
A Second Home: Due to scheduling issues at Tam-o-Shanter this weekend, Friday's match against Cardinal Stritch will be played at Springfield High School. The Gray Wolves have played there twice previously, both in 2013. Lourdes swept Saint Xavier on March 15 before falling in three sets to fourth-ranked Clarke one day later.
Some Quick Sets: Lourdes held Lawrence Tech to 10 points or fewer in two of the three sets last Wednesday evening. The Gray Wolves have now registered four sets this year in which the opposition has scored 10 points or less. Lourdes won the second set at Calumet by the score of 25-4, matching the fewest points allowed in a stanza in program history. The Gray Wolves held Lawrence Tech to five and 10 points in the first and third sets respectively on Wednesday, and limited Lawrence Tech to just nine points in the third set of season opener.
Remaining the Same: Lourdes stayed the same this week, coming in eighth in this week's NAIA Top-10 national poll. The Gray Wolves opened the season ranked seventh in the country, but fell to ninth before moving up one spot last week.
Among the Nation's Leaders: As a team, Lourdes ranks in the top-five statistically in four different categories. The Gray Wolves are tops among all NAIA programs tallying 12.38 digs per set and ranks second nationally with 12.93 kills per set. In addition, Lourdes ranks second handing out 12.07 assists per set and is third hitting .300 as a team.
Individual Leaders: CJ Rilveria ranks second in all of NAIA men's volleyball tallying 3.86 digs per set this season.Â
Brendan Brown is fifth in the country hitting at a .441 clip while
Ryan Ferkel is sixth nationally handing out 10.10 assists per set.Â
Ryan Maune ranks eighth nationally tallying 1.11 blocks per set.
