Lourdes shot just 30.6% from the floor on Wednesday evening while suffering a 60-47 setback to Concordia (Mich.) at Tam-o-Shanter.
"We missed a lot of bunnies and didn't follow shots we thought were in," head coach
Karen McConnell said after the game. "You couple that with not contesting their shots and needing to do a better job rebounding and it makes for a tough night."
Mariah DuPree (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) and
Molea Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison H.S.) led Lourdes with 10 points each while
Constance Conner (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush H.S.) added nine points. Thompson and Conner's efforts came off of the bench as the Gray Wolves outscored Concordia's reserves 22-11 on the night.
"Mariah gave us a nice spark in the starting lineup and we did get some contributions off of the bench," McConnell added.
The two schools were tied at 15 after the opening period of play but the Cardinals opened the second quarter with six straight points as part of a 15-13 run that put the visitors on top 28-18 midway through the stanza. Lourdes scored seven unanswered later in the quarter, cutting the deficit to three following back-to-back steals by
Andrea Hodge (Westerville, Ohio/Central H.S.), the first of which led to a
Payton Ramey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas H.S.) three-point play and the other she took to the basket and scored herself.
With Concordia on top 33-28 at the break, the Cardinals scored the first five points of the second half to increase the lead back to 10, and eventually led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter. Trailing by 17 early in the fourth, Lourdes went on an 11-2 run to cut its deficit to single digits. The Gray Wolves forced a defensive stop, but Concordia collected the offensive rebound and scored, and the Cardinals would lead by double figures the rest of the game.
Kari Borowiak led Concordia (13-12, 7-10 WHAC) with 16 points while Karlee Morris added 14 points and eight rebounds. The Cardinals outrebounded Lourdes 43-28 for the game. Concordia shot 46% from the floor, but committed 23 turnovers which led to 21 Lourdes points.
Lourdes (6-18, 3-14) will remain at home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host 10
th-ranked Davenport. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
