For the opening 20 minutes Lourdes gave 10
th-ranked Davenport all they could handle, but the Panthers scored the first 11 points of the second half and went on to a 66-40 victory over the Gray Wolves at Tam-o-Shanter.
Â
"Basketball is a game of two halves," head coach
Karen McConnell said after the game. "We had a good team effort in the first half, but when we were hit with adversity in the second half we became too individualized."
Â
After surrendering the first five points of the game and starting the game 0-for-8 from the floor, Lourdes' defense limited Davenport to just one field goal over the final 6:16 of the opening quarter. The Gray Wolves forced nine turnovers to overcome 4-of-16 shooting in the period, and ended the quarter on a 7-1 run in the final five minutes to take an 11-8 lead.
Â
The Gray Wolf lead grew to seven, 16-9, following a
Lindsey Motycka (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) jumper with 7:30 to play before halftime. Davenport answered with seven straight points to tie the game four minutes later, but
Constance Conner (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush H.S.) put Lourdes back in front on the next possession, and the Gray Wolves eventually took a 23-20 lead into the locker room.
Â
Davenport started quick in the second half, scoring on their first five possessions of the third quarter to take the lead for good, 31-23. The Panthers shot 73.3% (11-of-15) in the quarter, and used another 12-0 run in the stanza to push the lead to 19, 46-27.
Â
"We knew they would come out and push us after halftime and we didn't respond," McConnell added. "We put up some fast shots which played into their style of play."
Â
Davenport slowly continued to extend its lead throughout the fourth quarter, and held the Gray Wolves to just 25% (6-of-24) shooting after halftime.
Â
Conner finished as the only Gray Wolf to tally double figures, scoring a career-high 17 points to lead all scorers off of the bench.Â
Jesse Fidler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Lourdes.
Â
Alex Law led Davenport (20-5, 16-2 WHAC) with 15 points while Amanda Merz and Mallory Sewell added nine points each. Merz also handed out four assists.
Â
Lourdes (6-19, 3-15) will begin its final road trip of the season on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit, Mich. to face Marygrove. The first of three straight road contests begins at 6 p.m.
