Photo GalleryLourdes University wrapped up its spring trip in Florida on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Saint Xavier. The Gray Wolves fell in the opener 6-0 before suffering a 5-1 setback in game two at Lake Myrtle in Auburndale, Fla.
Â
In the opener, Tyler Hebel threw a three-hit shutout for Saint Xavier, striking out five without walking anyone for the win (2-1).
Â
The Cougars scored a pair of two-out runs in the second before adding four insurance tallies in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) had two of the three hits for the Gray Wolves.
Â
A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), allowing six runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings on the mound.
Â
The Gray Wolves struck first in game two as
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) led off with a single and stole second. After a fly ball advanced him to third, Sherman scored on a wild pitch to put Lourdes in front.
Â
That would be the Lourdes offense for the day, as the Gray Wolves managed just four hits in nightcap. Saint Xavier plated two runs in the fourth and added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.  The Cougars tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh to secure the win.
Â
Sherman finished the game with two hits for Lourdes while Ryan Pellack went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI for the Cougars.
Â
Matthew McKenzie earned the win (1-1) for Saint Xavier (4-4), allowing one run and three hits in 5.1 innings on the hill.Â
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), giving up two runs and two hits in four innings.
Â
"It was a frustrating trip, but we learned a lot," head coach
Jeremy Snow said. Â "We have to head back home and get to work. Â AJ and Bill gave us great starts on short rest and the defense was much better. Â We hit the ball well all day, but couldn't find a break as Saint Xavier made four or five outstanding plays."
Â
Lourdes (0-8) is scheduled to return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Goshen in the home opener. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Mercy Field.
