Lourdes split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader for the second straight day on Tuesday, dropping game one to Aquinas 1-0 before rebounding for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap at Kimble Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
"Today was another day with great pitching performances," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. "We had a tough loss in the opener, but rebounded well in game two. We're just waiting for our bats to break through."
Â
Nick Eely held Lourdes to just one hit, a second inning single to
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.), and allowed just one other Gray Wolf to reach base, via error, in the complete game win (2-3). He struck out seven.Â
Â
Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) matched Eely for eight innings, surrendering just seven hits and no runs, but left with a no decision after walking just two and striking out seven. Aquinas broke through in the ninth with one out. A walk and a double put two runners aboard, and Michael Oshinski delivered the game-winning single.
Â
In game two,
A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) tossed a complete game three-hitter without walking anyone to earn the victory (2-5). He struck out three over the seven innings, allowing just one run in the opening inning.
Â
Lourdes scored first as
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) singled and
Derek Scott (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.), serving as the catcher's courtesy runner, scored on a hit by
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.).
Â
The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning, collecting two of their three hits to put runners on second and third before a sacrifice fly tied the game.
Â
Alex Samson (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville H.S.) doubled to lead off the fifth inning before a pair of walks loaded the bases. A third free pass, this one to Toth, brought Samson home with what proved to be the winning run.
Â
Jex had two of Lourdes' five hits in the nightcap, as Aquinas (8-15, 1-9 WHAC) starter Bryan Mitzner allowed all of the Gray Wolf hits in four innings plus on the hill while suffering the loss (0-5). He struck out four and walked one.
Â
Lourdes (7-23, 2-10) will step out of WHAC play on Wednesday evening to play a single game against Rochester (Mich.). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Mercy Field.
