Phoenix Andrews (Canton, Ohio/Saint Thomas Aquinas H.S.) tossed eight innings of three-hit baseball in his collegiate debut, helping Lourdes defeat Rochester (Mich.) 7-0 on Wednesday evening at Mercy Field.
Â
"What a debut for Phoenix," head coach
Jeremy Snow said. "His pitch count got a little high which prevented him from going the distance, but he had a great outing."
Â
Lourdes bats provided Andrews plenty of support early, as the Gray Wolves scored three times in the opening inning and added two more runs in the second to build an early 5-0 lead.
Â
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) singled home the game's first run and
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) delivered a two-run double in the opening inning. Run-scoring singles by
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy) and Riggs in the second increased the lead.
Â
Riggs' third hit of the game, a RBI double in the fourth, made it 6-0 Lourdes and
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) plated the final run in the eighth with a pinch-hit fielder's choice.
Â
Riggs and
Zack Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) each had three hits for the Gray Wolves as part of a 10-hit attack.
Â
"Our bats finally came alive," Snow added. "It was nice to see a couple of multi-hit games from guys that we knew could produce."
Â
Zach Babb (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) tossed a perfect ninth to complete the fifth shutout of the season for Gray Wolf hurlers.
Â
Ayhan Ozgen suffered the loss (0-1) for Rochester (13-17), surrendering six runs and eight hits in 3.2 innings on the hill.
Â
Lourdes (8-23), winners of three of its last four games, will head to Livonia, Mich. this weekend for a four-game series against Madonna. First pitch in game one of Saturday's twinbill is set for 1 p.m. at Illitch Ballpark.
