Lourdes suffered a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference setbacks on Saturday, falling to Madonna 7-2 and 3-0 at Ilitch Ballpark in Livonia, Mich.
The Gray Wolves were no-hit by Taylor Turner in game two, as he allowed just three base runners, two via errors and a seventh inning walk while striking out five in the win (2-0).
"You have to give him credit," head coach
Jeremy Snow said. "The kid did a good job."
Madonna scored a run in the second and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth, giving Turner all the offense he would need.
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) had a solid outing on the hill for the Gray Wolves in the loss (1-6), scattering nine hits without walking anyone and striking out four in a complete game effort as well.
"Billy did a great job today," Snow added. "We just couldn't get the offense going to help him."
In the opener, Madonna scored three runs in the first and added another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Lourdes finally broke onto the scoreboard in the fifth as three straight hits by
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.),
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.), and
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) plated a run.
The Gray Wolves pulled within two, 4-2, in the seven as
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.),
Glen Crabtree (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.), and
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) tallied three straight one-out singles. The Gray Wolves stranded two on the bases though.
Madonna added three insurance runs in the eighth to secure the victory.
Lourdes banged out 12 hits in the opener, including three by Laubscher and two each by Riggs and
Kyle Sherman (Collierville, Tenn./Rossville Christian Academy).
Alex DeYonker earned the win (4-1) for Madonna, allowing one run and seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Paul Avila (Nogales, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) suffered the loss (1-6), allowing four runs and six hits in six innings.
"Paul settled in nicely after the first inning," Snow added. "He gave us a chance to win but a couple of costly mistakes and 14 left baserunners proved costly."
Lourdes (8-25, 2-12 WHAC) and Madonna (21-14, 11-4) will wrap up their four-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Ilitch Ballpark. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for noon.
