After Lourdes swept a doubleheader from Cornerstone on Friday afternoon, the Golden Eagles returned the favor on Saturday, defeating the Gray Wolves 7-3 and 1-0 at DeWitt Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
Cornerstone took the lead in the opening inning of game one, plating a pair of run, including an unearned tally after taking advantage of a Lourdes miscue. The Gray Wolves answered in their next at bat though, as
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) and
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) tallied RBI singles in the second.
Â
A single and a double put the Golden Eagles back on top, 3-2, in the fifth, but the Gray Wolves again answered in their next plate appearance. With two outs
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) drew a walk and
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) doubled him home.
Â
Joel Boersen homered in the sixth, and Cornerstone added another single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away with the victory. Lourdes was unable to respond to the runs, as the final nine batters were all retired in a row.
Â
Justin Geerts earned the win (4-2) for Cornerstone, allowing just three hits in eight innings of work.Â
A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) suffered the loss (2-7), surrendering four runs and eight hits in six innings.
Â
Game two was a pitcher's duel until the seventh, as Brandon Willard allowed just three Lourdes hits in 6.1 innings of work while
Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) suffered the loss (2-4), allowing the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh in a complete game effort. He struck out five and limited Cornerstone (17-24, 11-11 WHAC) to just four hits.
Â
Troy Holstad earned the win (2-2) in relief, tossing the final two-thirds of an inning in the seventh.
Â
Bill Laranga (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) managed two of the three hits in the game for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Lourdes (10-31, 4-18) will return home to Mercy Field on Wednesday afternoon to begin a 10-game homestand to close out the regular season. The Gray Wolves will entertain Indiana Tech, with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
