A.J. Schraffenberger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener, helping Lourdes split Saturday's doubleheader with Marygrove. The Gray Wolves won the opener 3-0 before the Mustangs won game two 24-5 at Mercy Field.
Â
Schraffenberger carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, striking out six while walking just two in the complete game victory (3-7). Only twice, once in the third and the other in the eighth inning, did he allow more than one baserunner in a frame.
Â
Daniel Bailey was nearly as effective for Marygrove, shutting Lourdes out on just five hits through seven innings. The Gray Wolves broke through in the eighth with two outs.Â
Zak Laubscher (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) walked and stole second.Â
Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.),
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.), and
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) tallied three straight RBI doubles, giving Lourdes the 3-0, which was more than enough for Schraffenberger.
Â
Bailey took the loss (1-8) despite going the distance, allowing eight hits and a walk while striking out two.
Â
Jex had three of Lourdes' eight hits while Crabtree had two more in the opener.
Â
Lourdes took the lead in game two as well, scoring three times without a hit in the third inning. Three walks, a hit by pitch, and an error, all before the first out could be recorded, put the Gray Wolves in front.
Â
Marygrove took control in the middle innings, taking advantage of 21 Lourdes walks in the game, 20 of which came in the fourth inning or later. The Mustangs sent 17 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring 11 times, all with two outs. The guests added six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, sending 12 batters to the plate in each frame.
Â
Lourdes added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Jex, but that would be one of just two hits for the Gray Wolves in the contest.Â
Nick Toth (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) also had a two-bagger in the fifth inning.
Â
Chase Younkini went 4-for-6 with five runs batted in to lead Marygrove, as the Mustangs tallied 18 hits in game two. Both sides also made four errors.
Â
Nick Anderson earned the complete game win (2-5), allowing just two hits but walking eight.Â
Adam Hoyos (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) suffered the loss (0-4), working the first 3.2 innings.
Â
Lourdes (11-34, 5-21 WHAC) and Marygrove (3-35, 2-24) will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field with Senior Day activities taking place between games.
